This year, it\u2019s the pandemic, not the partying, that\u2019s got parents fearing spring break. <\/p>\n

\u201cCOVID is my No. 1 concern,\u201d mom of two Kellie Dennis told The Post. Dennis, who lives in Rhode Island, tweeted about her painful debate with her high-schooler about going on vacation to Fort Myers, Florida.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to tell my son (16) that he could not go to Florida for spring break with his friend and his family. He was pissed but then got over it,\u201d Dennis wrote<\/a> on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cI felt like a horrible mom when I told him, but I knew that there was no way in hell he was going! Then I bought him an Xbox game<\/a> he has been wanting!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dennis said she had to be \u201cthe bad guy\u201d and used the Xbox \u201cCall of Duty\u201d game to soften the blow. \u201cIt was that mom guilt,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was cheaper than sending him to Florida.\u201d <\/p>\n

After seeing that Miami Beach, the ultimate spring break destination, declared a state of emergency on Saturday and brought in a SWAT team to enforce curfew, Dennis was grateful for her motherly instincts. \u201cThank God I didn\u2019t send him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many other parents are also resorting to bribes to incentivize kids to skip the trip<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey say, \u2018I\u2019m giving you a car for graduation!\u2019 or \u2018You want a nose job?\u2019 \u201d said Amanda Uhry, who runs Manhattan Private School Advisors. \u201cParents will do anything to get their kid to stay home. Those who can afford it [bribe].\u201d<\/p>\n

But that isn\u2019t the salve parents imagine. \u201cKids don\u2019t want the cars \u2014 they want to hang out with their friends at Atlantis,\u201d Uhry added. \u201cKids are myopic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey all feel bulletproof,\u201d one Upper East Side mom said of teenagers. She admitted she had to get creative to make things up to her two sons, one in high school and one in college in New Orleans, who both wanted to go away on spring break.<\/p>\n

\u201cI schlepped my whole family to New Orleans [to visit my son], so I could avoid skiing in crowded resorts,\u201d the mom told The Post. \u201cI promised [him] I\u2019d treat all his friends to dinner if they\u2019d just stay in town.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colleges are taking their own measures to clamp down on travel. Some universities are canceling spring break<\/a> altogether, instead offering a few sporadic \u201chealth and wellness days\u201d without classes as a compromise. University of California, Davis experimented by giving out $75 gift cards<\/a> to students if they stayed on campus during spring break to curb the amount of kids jetting off to various locales. <\/p>\n

NYU is among the colleges that reduced the number of days off for spring break in order to discourage superspreader jaunts. \u201cThis year, they only gave us a Friday off,\u201d lamented one disapp<\/a>ointed freshman. \u201cThey don\u2019t want people to travel.\u201d <\/p>\n

She told The Post that students are too afraid to go away for fear of being ratted on by student snitches. Classmates telling on each other for breaking social-distancing rules has been rampant, she said, which is why she wanted to remain anonymous for this story.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will go out of their way to snitch on another person, if you posted a picture at a party,\u201d she said, so she skipped her trip to avoid being shamed. \u201cFlorida would\u2019ve been my dream . . . There\u2019s a constant fear of getting caught.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many high school kids see the senior year spring break trip as a rite of passage \u2014 and, in 2021, a way to blow off steam after a year of sitting in front of a screen. But kids under 18 typically need a parent to chaperone their crew to destinations including the Bahamas, Cancun and the Caribbean, and that provides another issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want to deprive your kid when your kid has already been deprived, but you don\u2019t want to be the chaperone parent because you expose yourself to COVID,\u201d said Uhry.<\/p>\n

One downtown mom begrudgingly agreed to accompany her high school senior daughter and two friends to Florida in a few weeks. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was my way of getting her off my back when she kept asking, \u2018Why can\u2019t I go to the Bahamas?\u2019 \u201d Knowing her daughter had \u201cher heart set on going away,\u201d the mom \u201cmade a deal\u201d that she\u2019d stay at a separate hotel. <\/p>\n

She\u2019s confident that her daughter will just be so grateful to go away, she\u2019ll avoid mass gatherings and stick to beach chairs and dinners with her girlfriends. <\/p>\n

Still, even though they\u2019ll be in Tampa, away from the action of Miami, she\u2019s bracing herself for mayhem. \u201cWhen we get down there, I think it\u2019s going to be another Woodstock.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
