Matt Groening has insisted he is \u201cproud\u201d of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the controversial South Asian character from \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d accused of being a racist stereotype<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the Apu stories are fantastic, and he\u2019s one of the most nuanced characters on a silly two-dimensional cartoon show,\u201d the show\u2019s creator Groening told USA Today<\/a> of the show\u2019s Indian-American Kwik-E-Mart shopkeeper.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, yeah, I\u2019m proud of Apu,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got plans for Apu, but we have to see if we can make the stories work \u2026 We\u2019re working on something kind of ambitious. That\u2019s all I can say,\u201d he teased fans in the interview.<\/p>\n

The 67-year-old cartoonist told the paper that he was \u201ctrying not to open up another chasm of criticism\u201d in defending the character accused of reflecting racist stereotypes while voiced by a white actor.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it doesn\u2019t matter what I say. I\u2019ll get it anyway,\u201d Groening conceded.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s creator said it was not his idea to no longer have white actors voicing non-white characters \u2014 including Hank Azaria stepping down from portraying Apu \u2014 but he said he was \u201cfine with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho can be against diversity? So it\u2019s great,\u201d he said, while stressing that the show had hired \u201cbrilliant actors<\/a> who can do multiple voices\u201d rather than just \u201cto play specific characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s part of the fun of animation. However, to be more inclusive and hire more people, I\u2019m completely in favor of that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He app<\/a>eared to have a dig at the rise in woke critics when asked if it would \u201chave been better to hire a more diverse cast years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. And I hear they want to take the guns away from Yosemite Sam. He\u2019s a little hot-headed,\u201d Groening quipped.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
