What\u2019s that? <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.326502\/gov.uscourts.cand.326502.306.2.pdf\">A judge certifying a class action lawsuit<\/a> against the company for its infamous \u2018butterfly keyboard?\u2019 Ohhh, you saucy thing.<\/p>\n<p>The butterfly keyboard lawsuit isn\u2019t new (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2018\/05\/12\/apple-keyboard-lawsuit\/\">it was filed back in 2018<\/a>), but this latest <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> means the case gets closer to actually making a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the certification of this as a class action lawsuit won\u2019t impact everyone. According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/22\/22344397\/apple-macbook-butterfly-keyboard-switches-defective-class-action-lawsuit-certified\">The Verge<\/a> (and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.326502\/gov.uscourts.cand.326502.306.2.pdf\">the case documents<\/a>)\u00a0the butterfly keyboard lawsuit will only cover those who purchased one in seven states (California, New York, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, and Michigan, if you\u2019re interested).<\/p>\n<p>The main thrust of the butterfly keyboard lawsuit is that the company knew the mechanism was a pile of crap, and yet continued to sell it. This got DENIED though, as the plaintiffs (AKA the folks filing the butterfly keyboard lawsuit) successfully argued that there were inherent problems with the\u00a0butterfly keyboard that the tweaks didn\u2019t fix.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively, they state Apple did nothing to fix\u00a0\u201ctight spaces between the keys, [or] the low-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> aspect of the design\u201d with the modifications.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens next? Basically law stuff. The case will trundle on and Apple will do its best to weasel out of doing anything. But you know what?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_hope_Apple_gets_battered_by_the_butterfly_keyboard_lawsuit\"><\/span>I hope Apple gets battered by the butterfly keyboard lawsuit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Long story short, Apple\u2019s actions regarding the butterfly keyboard were reprehensible.<\/p>\n<p>It was clear to anyone and everyone that the hardware was faulty, but instead of actually\u00a0<em>fixing\u00a0<\/em>it, the company just\u00a0flung shit at the wall\u00a0and hoped that plugged the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>When Apple finally discontinued the butterfly keyboard, I wrote a piece saying the company should reimburse everyone who had one of the machines. I still believe that.<\/p>\n<p>The company literally provided defective machines to consumers for\u00a0<em>five years.\u00a0<\/em>In a best case scenario, that\u2019s negligence. In the worst, that shows a malicious disregard for the people using those laptops.<\/p>\n<p>Of course though, Apple did nothing to fix the mess it made. And if it takes the butterfly keyboard lawsuit for it to finally pay its dues? Good.
