“#Colorado cops couldn’t save fallen colleague, feared ambush<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

The Colorado mass killer engaged police in a \u201cgunfight\u201d that lasted nearly an hour \u2014 with officers unable to reach their fallen comrade because they feared an ambush, according to harrowing dispatch messages.<\/p>\n

The first dispatch message alerting officers to the King Soopers store in Boulder came at 2:32 p.m., with the warning that \u201cit looks like we have an active shooter,\u201d according to recordings shared by 9 News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have multiple calls coming from inside of people that have barricaded themselves inside,\u201d the dispatcher then warned.<\/p>\n

The shooter, who has yet to be identified, was described in the calls as \u201c30s, white male, beard wearing a tact vest.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first two officers on scene \u2014 believed to include Eric Talley, the father of seven who was among the 10 killed \u2014 arrived and found \u201ca party down. In front of the store,\u201d a female officer radioed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes not match the shooter descript<\/a>ion,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The officer\u2019s voice quickly became panicked at 2:37 p.m. \u2014 just five minutes after the initial alert \u2014 when she radioed, \u201cThe shooter is inside \u2014 he just shot at us twice!\u201d<\/p>\n

Just a minute later, another officer reported, \u201cOfficer down inside the building!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in a gunfight,\u201d an unexpectedly calm-sounding officer reported at 2:39 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill multiple shots being fired at us .. we\u2019re taking multiple rounds,\u201d the officer said.<\/p>\n

At 3:05 p.m., nearly 30 minutes after the report of an officer down, his colleagues were still unable to get to him to see if he could be saved, the messages made clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to push into that officer. He\u2019s about 30 yards inside the store, down \u2014 we cannot get to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have no known location of the shooter \u2014 we think he might be setting up an ambush,\u201d an officer warned in the calls to dispatch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not know where he is. He is armed with a rifle \u2026 our officers shot back and returned fire. We do not know where he is in the store,\u201d the officer warned.<\/p>\n

According to the Colorado Sun<\/a>, one officer also said, \u201cDue to body armor, head-shots only.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, by 3:20 p.m. a traffic officer radioed through that he was \u201cin contact with possible suspect,\u201d and by 3:26 p.m. it was confirmed he was in custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cPer intel from the suspect that was pulled out, he said he came here alone,\u201d an officer reported.<\/p>\n

By the end of the nearly hour-long carnage, 10 people were dead, including officer Talley, 51.<\/p>\n

Police later confirmed that the killer had been injured, but have yet to identify him, nor say if he was the half-naked man with a bloodied right leg filmed being led away in handcuffs.<\/p>\n
