In February, the Pentagon\u2019s \u201cmad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>\u201d unit tested how they\u2019d perform as a team.<\/p>\n<p>The battle pitted two friendly F-16s\u00a0against a single enemy aircraft. Each fighter jet was equipped with a\u00a0gun for short-range engagements\u00a0and a missile for more distant targets.<\/p>\n<p>Colonel Dan \u201cAnimal\u201d Javorsek, program manager in DARPA\u2019s Strategic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> Office, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2021-03-18a\">said<\/a> testing multiple weapons and aircraft\u00a0introduced new dynamics to the trials:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>These new engagements represent an important step in building trust in the algorithms since they allow us to assess how the AI agents handle clear avenue of fire restrictions set up to prevent fratricide. This is exceedingly important when operating with offensive weapons in a dynamic and confusing environment that includes a manned fighter and also affords the opportunity to increase the complexity and teaming associated with maneuvering two aircraft in relation to an adversary.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>DARPA is also assessing how much pilots trust the systems. Javorsek said they\u2019ve installed sensors in a jet to measure physiological responses, such as where a pilot\u2019s head is pointing and where their eyes are moving:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>This enables us to see how much the pilot is checking on the autonomy by looking outside the window, and comparing that to how much time they spend on their battle management task.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DARPA ACE Program Makes Strides in Phase 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sd8ryTWOjBg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They now plan to test\u00a0out\u00a0AI\u00a0on real-world aircraft. To do this, DARPA is creating an aero-performance model of an L-39 jet trainer, which the algorithm will use to make predictions and maneuver decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Once the model is complete, the agency will begin modifying the aircraft so the algorithm can control it.\u00a0<span>The Pentagon\u00a0plans\u00a0to test them in live-fly dogfights\u00a0<\/span>in late 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:\u00a0Iranian nuclear scientist allegedly assassinated via killer robot]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Critics, however, have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/missy_cummings\/status\/1296596582255730688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1296596582255730688%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthenextweb.com%2Fneural%2F2020%2F08%2F21%2Fan-ai-just-embarrassed-the-us-air-force-in-a-virtual-dogfight%2F\">questioned the value<\/a> of the\u00a0trials. The rules-based nature of\u00a0air-to-air combat is a good fit for algorithmic decisions and the \u201cperfect information\u201d supplied by the simulators isn\u2019t available in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the AI worked equally well in reality, there\u2019s been only\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/duels-among-the-clouds-11565878829\">one\u00a0dogfight involving a US aircraft<\/a> in the last 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>A more pressing concern involves the rush to develop autonomous weapons.
