“#Serial Experiments Lain Writer Gives Update On Despera Anime<\/a><\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Chiaki J. Konaka, the writer of science<\/a> fiction anime Serial Experiments Lain<\/em>, has provided a small update on Despera<\/span><\/em>, a Taisho era-set science fiction anime project that was first announced in 2009<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Writing on his Twitter<\/a> account, Konaka said that Despera<\/em>, had been suspended \u201cfor a year and a few months\u201d due to the COVID pandemic. However, the project remains alive and may potentially see an announcement regarding it next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Konaka wrote, \u201cThe production funding scheme is 80% completed. The core staff also did a lot of work up until a year ago. It\u2019s just been restarted, so some kind of announcement won\u2019t be made until 2022. I understand. It\u2019s a long way off.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut we, <\/span>@abfly [Serial Experiments Lain<\/em> original character designer Abe Yoshitoshi] and others been working on this project for over 18 years now. We\u2019re still trying to do it, so please be patient with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to report on the progress of “Desupera”. Due to the pandemic, the project was suspended for a year and a few months. I’ve been away from Twitter for another reason, though.<\/p>\n

In 2018<\/a>, Anime News<\/a> Network reported on a Twitter update by Konaka, in which he tweeted a picture of himself with Yoshitoshi and wrote, \u201cThere is no good sign, but we\u2019ll spend our effort for making Despera<\/em>.\u201d Konaka had also said at the time that the anime business model was posing issues for the anime\u2019s creation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the case of Despera<\/em>, it is not simply a matter of funds, but now it is in chaos of animation business in Japan,\u201d Konaka was quoted as saying. \u201cThe old business model has collapsed, and the route to make independent planning as a commercial work has disapp<\/a>eared. That is a problem. But well, I will do something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The anime was originally meant to be directed by Serial Experiments Lain <\/em>and Kino\u2019s Journey <\/em>director Ryutaro Nakamura, who passed away in 2013<\/a>. The project would have been Nakamura\u2019s first collaboration with Konaka and Yoshitoshi since their work on 1998\u2019s Serial Experiments Lain<\/em>.\u00a0 It was announced in 2015<\/a> that the project would proceed with a new director.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Despera<\/em> Roman Album<\/a> was released in 2011. Prior to that, the story was serialized in Animage from 2009 to 2013 with a total of 13 chapters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anime News Network describes the anime as:<\/span><\/p>\n

The story centers around Ain<\/cite>, a<\/span> 14-year-old girl who builds devices despite the lack of the scientific background required for them. The science-fiction story is set in Japan\u2019s Taish\u014d era in 1922 \u2014 one year before the 1923 Great Kant\u014d earthquake in the Tokyo area.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
