We need to halve emissions by 2030, and then halve them again\u2026 and then again. This equates to a 7% year-on-year reduction. Minimum. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion of how this is achieved turned to the current big business trend of offsetting emissions or balancing CO2 emissions by investing in other green initiatives like planting trees. The problem is, this allows companies to talk up their green credentials while clinging to a carbon-intensive status quo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referencing the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/exponentialroadmap.org\/1-5c-business-playbook\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.5\u00b0C Business Playbook<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a guide helping companies to create an effective strategy for halving their emissions by 2030<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Johan Falk reminded companies that they have to clean up their own operations before investing in nature-based climate solutions outside their value chain. This means cutting operational emissions and initiating your own sustainable solutions before buying trees or throwing money at the problem.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diana Fox Carney<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agrees. It can never be just enough. Decarbonising needs to go as far as manually removing residual emissions. Because once we can successfully eliminate dispersed carbon dioxide from the air, things like long-haul aviation become viable. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offsetting will definitely play a role in reaching net-zero, but climate neutrality cannot be bought. Companies today should not claim that their product is in any way climate-neutral\u00a0until it actually is. But they are not perfect.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every product today goes to market with an environmental debt, and Polestar cars are no exception. However, when you consider that electric vehicles have the potential to be carbon neutral and traditionally fuelled cars don\u2019t, a dot of light appears at the end of the emission-filled tunnel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Polestar, we\u2019re not trying to hide the amount of work still to be done. Nor are we busy smashing self-defined benchmarks. Our<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polestar.com\/nl\/electric-sustainability\/transparency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Life Cycle Assessment<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports document the environmental impact of our products, as well as the methodology used to measure said impact, and anyone can access them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want our consumers and employees to know what they\u2019re buying into.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Make_climate_your_business\"><\/span>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><b>Make climate your business <\/b><b><br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the subject of accountability, Falk maintains that rich countries, companies, and individuals should be leading the way. From a consumer perspective, greener choices are often more expensive, and no one is denying that technological progress can be pricey.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also concludes that because governments are moving too slowly, the bulk of the work will fall to businesses. But even here we see leadership absolving themselves of responsibility. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tortoisemedia.com\/intelligence\/responsibility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tortoise Responsibility 100 Index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compares the FTSE 100 companies to each other based on social and environmental policies. And while figures do show that significant efforts are being made, not enough have climate strategies that align with the 1.5\u00b0C Paris Agreement. Johan Falk says \u201cmake an estimate of your emissions, set targets, and get moving.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exponential Roadmap<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Initiative that brings together innovators, scientists, companies, and NGOs, with the mission to halve emissions before 2030 \u2013 stresses that climate requires a holistic approach.\u00a0Everyone needs to overhaul their value chains and re-engineer business models. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polestar is an open book when it comes to traceability and transparency, enabling it to stay accountable for the change it\u2019s committed to making. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fossil pathways will close this decade anyway, so businesses must look at the practicalities, change what can be changed quickly, and take it from there.
