“#’Jeopardy!’ in danger with ’embarrassing’ Dr. Oz as host, say contestants<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The fate of \u201cJeopardy!\u201d is in jeopardy \u2014 or so claim former players on the long-running game<\/a> show.<\/p>\n

As Dr. Mehmet Oz app<\/a>roaches the second day of his two-week stint as guest \u201cJeopardy!\u201d host, former winners and contestants are voicing their concerns over the future of the ABC series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kathy Krebs, who failed to make it to Final Jeopardy during her episode in 2016, joked that she\u2019s \u201cno longer the most embarrassing thing to happen on the show\u201d as a result of the Dr. Oz debacle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Oz is doing far more damage to that image than I ever could,\u201d she told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole thing is silly, but then to take Dr. Oz \u2026\u00a0\u00a0I felt it was an insult to the memory of Alex Trebek \u2014 and to the contestants and the viewers,\u201d said Heidi Sanchez, a two-time winner in 2007.<\/p>\n

Last month, nearly 600 former players signed a petition\u00a0calling for the removal of the celebrity MD\u00a0from the star-studded lineup slated to host in lieu of late former host Alex Trebek<\/a>, who tirelessly defended the show\u2019s integrity during his 36-year tenure.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Oz stands in opposition to everything that \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 stands for,\u201d decried petitioners\u00a0in an open letter<\/a>\u00a0aimed at the show\u2019s producers, namely executive producer Mike Richards.<\/p>\n

\u201d \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 is known for being incredibly rigorous; a well-deserved reputation,\u201d they concluded. \u201cTo then invite Dr. Oz to guest-host is a slap in the face to all involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the letter\u2019s authors has since come forward about her involvement in the movement. <\/p>\n

\u201cWith such a large number of contestants, there aren\u2019t many things we can all agree on,\u201d co-writer Rachel Paterno-Mahler told The Post of the backlash against Dr. Oz. \u201cBut this was pretty universal across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reps for Dr. Oz and \u201cJeopardy!\u201d did not respond to The Post\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Aside from Oz\u2019s two-weeks \u2014 which began Monday and runs through April 2, the\u00a0parade of television personalities<\/a>\u00a0to step in has included broadcaster Katie Couric, Richards and former \u201cJeopardy!\u201d champion Ken Jennings. In weeks to come, pro-baller Aaron Rodgers, a self-proclaimed lifetime fan of the show, CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper and CBS journalist Bill Whitaker are slated to take the podium.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of these things is not like the other,\u201d said Brenda Gant, whose turn on the show aired in February of last year.<\/p>\n

Now, Gant and others are speaking out, pleading with producers to honor the show\u2019s sacred, \u201cfact-based\u201d integrity, and a legacy set forth by their beloved Trebek.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there is a worry,\u201d Sean Anderson, a three-time winner in October 2015, told The Post. \u201cNo one is sure what the plan is,\u201d he said of the search for a new host.<\/p>\n

Jennings, who was the first interim host following Trebek\u2019s death, is a favorite amongst fans and fellow ex-competitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly think Ken Jennings would be the ideal person just because he lives and breathes the show,\u201d said April 2020 winner Hemant Mehta. \u201cBut there are plenty of options that would make total sense,\u201d such as LeVar Burton, he and others suggested. \u201cThat would be pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anderson said he doesn\u2019t have \u201ca favorite,\u201d but Dr. Oz \u201cstuck out\u201d for the wrong reasons. \u201cOn the Cronkite-Jones Continuum,\u201d he joked, referring to Walter Cronkite and Alex Jones of \u201cInfoWars,\u201d \u201cDr. Oz falls a little too close to Jones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it\u2019s just a publicity stunt,\u201d added former champ Sanchez of the controversial guest host choice.<\/p>\n

Like many other fans, Sanchez believes it won\u2019t be easy to replace Trebek, who gave the show a certain\u00a0je ne sais quoi<\/em> during the 8,200+ shows he hosted. \u201cWhen Alex adds something [to a clue] \u2026 that\u2019s him, he knows this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

By contrast, Dr. Oz \u2014 who was friends with Trebek<\/a> \u2014 has a reputation for touting pseudo-scientific theory in the absence of rigorous research and peer-supported evidence. Most recently, he made flawed comments about the reopening of schools which forced him to issue an apology.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Dr. Oz\u2019s world, everything is a possible answer,\u201d said Mehta, echoing a \u201crunning joke\u201d within the former contestant community. Unlike Dr. Oz\u2019s show daytime talk show, \u201cThere\u2019s no room for nuance in \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the petition\u2019s first signatories, Paterno-Mahler isn\u2019t calling for a boycott of the show. Regardless of the current host, she said \u201cwe are fully supportive of contestants on the show,\u201d and joins fellow fans and former players as they continue to watch the game almost daily.<\/p>\n

Even if producers confirm that Oz is out of the equation, some fans worry that the interim roster of hosts may indicate a shift in tone for the series \u2014 to put a greater emphasis on celebrity over the game itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s popular, he\u2019s successful,\u201d said Tom Kelso, a three-time champ in 2002. \u201cBut he\u2019s popular and successful for the wrong things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trebek himself said the host should not be the star of the show, according to Jennings, who revealed that Alex gave him sound advice days before he passed away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to him on the phone actually the weekend he passed,\u201d Jennings, who was serving as consulting producer at the time, told \u201cGood Morning America<\/a>,\u201d noting that Trebek said \u201cthe host is not the star of \u2018Jeopardy!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just hard to imagine that in the TV landscape today, a star of his size saying, \u2018Hey, the game is not about you\u2019 \u2014 but that was great advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelso agreed, telling The Post the show made him \u2014 not the host \u2014 feel like the star. \u201cAnd that\u2019s because of Trebek. That was his mantra.\u201c\n <\/p><\/div>\n
