Veteran actor George Segal, who was nominated for an Oscar for 1966\u2032s \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,\u201d\u00a0and starred in TV\u2019s \u201cThe Goldbergs,\u201d died on Tuesday. He was 87.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery,\u201d his wife, Sonia Segal, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

A native of Great Neck, New York,\u00a0Segal made his bones as a stage actor before becoming popular in the 1960s and 70s for both dramatic and comedic roles.<\/p>\n

In 1965, he played an egocentric painter in the star-studded \u201cShip of Fools\u201d and a P.O.W.\u00a0in the war drama \u201cKing Rat.\u201d<\/p>\n

His best known role would come two years later, as young college professor Nick in the harrowing marital drama \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,\u201d based on the Edward Albee play by the same name.<\/p>\n

The entire cast was nominated for Academy Awards: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton for starring roles, Sandy Dennis and Segal for supporting performances. While the women won Oscars, the men did not.<\/p>\n

Younger audiences may know Segal better for his TV roles, including as magazine publisher Jack Gallo on the NBC series<\/a> \u201cJust Shoot Me\u201d which ran from 1997 to 2003.<\/p>\n

Since 2013, he had played Albert \u201cPops\u201d Solomon, the grandfather on the ABC sitcom \u201cThe Goldbergs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Series creator Adam F. Goldberg paid tribute to Segal on Twitter<\/a> late Tuesday, writing, \u201cToday we lost a legend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a true honor being a small part of George Segal\u2019s amazing legacy,\u201d Goldberg wrote<\/a>. \u201cBy pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actress Wendi McLendon-Covey, who plays family matriarch Beverly Goldberg on the show, also remembered Segal, posting a photo of the co-stars hugging on Instagram. <\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t know the last time I saw you would be the last time I\u2019d see you,\u201d she wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A lifelong banjo lover, Segal performed at New York\u2019s Carnegie Hall in 1981 with his group, the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band.<\/p>\n

He leaves behind his wife and two daughters from a previous marriage.<\/p>\n
