Mayor de Blasio on Tuesday announced the creation of a \u201cRacial Justice Commission\u201d that he said would suggest changes to the City Charter \u2014 and even \u201cchange the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The move came after de Blasio touted it in advance more than a dozen times over the past year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But he gave the 11-member commission a deadline to submit its recommendations in December, when he\u2019ll be a lame duck following the Nov. 2 mayoral election.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Changing the City Charter requires app<\/a>roval by the voters and last happened in 2019, when the powers of the Civilian Complaint Review Board were expanded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

De Blasio claimed his new panel\u2019s work would be modeled in part on that of South Africa\u2019s post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission, saying, \u201cWe want to take from those international models and adapt them to the reality here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRacism\u2019s been with us for 400 years, but it can be eradicated,\u201d the mayor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis group will change the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

De Blasio didn\u2019t detail how that would happen but said he was open to the idea of paying reparations after a reporter said the commission\u2019s chairwoman \u2014 Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies \u2014 has called that something to be considered.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Betsy Gotbaum of the good-government group Citizens Union called the timing of de Blasio\u2019s announcement \u2014 so near the end of his two-term tenure \u2014 \u201cvery bizarre.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
