Liv and Elliot are back!<\/p>\n

Nearly 10 years after Christopher Meloni\u2019s<\/a> last app<\/a>earance as Det. Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit<\/i><\/a> (the actor quit over a contract dispute), the fan favorite cop is teaming up to catch bad guys with his former partner turned SVU captain, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay<\/a>). The much-anticipated reunion happens on a two-hour April 1 crossover, which opens with an SVU<\/i> episode that leads into the premiere of producer Dick Wolf\u2019s<\/a> Stabler-centric spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither Mariska norI had bet on this reunion,\u201d says Meloni, whose post-SVU<\/i> projects include True Blood<\/i><\/a>, Pose<\/i><\/a>, and The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/i><\/a>, \u201cbut the stars aligned, and I\u2019m very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though many details about the show are strictly top-secret, Meloni shares what he can about his new role and happily reveals his joy to be working again with his old friend and onetime screen partner.<\/p>\n

What drew you back to the L&O<\/i> family?<\/b><\/p>\n

Christopher Meloni:<\/strong> Dick Wolf\u2019s persuasive pitch! I liked the idea of a recognizable character in an unrecognizable landscape. The [NYPD] environment has changed, as has Stabler\u2019s place in it. He has to grapple with and evolve on lots of issues.<\/p>\n

How much of a plus is it being able to work part of the time with Mariska?<\/b><\/p>\n

When I walked onto the SVU<\/i> set, for Mariska and me it was an instantaneous, almost [psychic] connection. There\u2019s a shorthand which is very comfortable.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the key to that comfort?<\/b><\/p>\n

We both care very much but also connect very deeply through humor. We are serious when it needs to be, but we appreciate the lighter side, or at times the edgier side, of things with humor. Some might call it inappropriate. [Laughs<\/i>] We know these characters and this relationship better than anybody.\u2026 It\u2019s been a difficult time; we did the table reads by Zoom, we rehearse with masks on and it\u2019s so distancing. But whenever I look at Mariska\u2019s eyes \u2014 there it is. We\u2019re back!<\/p>\n

That makes a good recipe for her future visits to Organized Crime<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Have you teased Mariska yet about your show competing with SVU<\/i>?<\/b><\/p>\n

Not yet, but as soon as we\u2019re ahead of them in the ratings, maybe I will!<\/p>\n

Stabler\u2019s abrupt resignation from the sex crimes team devastated Benson. Is a conversation needed?<\/b><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t handled well. There are deep wounds that need to be addressed and healed. We take fumbling steps toward that.<\/p>\n

Does he lead the organized crime unit?<\/b><\/p>\n

I thought he was going to be the boss, but I\u2019m just a detective taking orders from the boss lady [Sgt. Ayanna Bell, played by Deputy<\/i>\u2018s<\/a> Danielle Mon\u00e9 Truitt]. They\u2019re two people doing a dance, learning each other\u2019s style.<\/p>\n

After all these years, he\u2019s still a detective?<\/b><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what you get for not taking the sergeant\u2019s exam and making bad choices. Elliot has always had a problem with authority. He always bristles about the system \u2014 to his detriment.<\/p>\n

Has that hotheaded guy matured?<\/b><\/p>\n

He\u2019s gained more worldly experience, which has given him a wider lens to see people, the job and the system.<\/p>\n

That said, we know he\u2019s dealing with a family tragedy, perhaps involving his wife, Kathy (Isabel Gillies<\/a>). How is he emotionally?<\/b><\/p>\n

He\u2019s lost and trying to find an anchor, the compass pointing north.<\/p>\n

Where has the detective been for the last decade?<\/b><\/p>\n

He wanted to get far away from the sense of betrayal he felt from the NYPD. But bitter is no way to go through life. He needed to heal himself, which started with healing his relationship with his wife. That made him a better man who\u2019s better equipped to handle things.<\/p>\n

Was he involved in law enforcement?<\/b><\/p>\n

He was in a very interesting unit of the NYPD.<\/p>\n

He stayed with the department! That\u2019s a surprise.<\/b><\/p>\n

I plead the Fifth!<\/p>\n

What kind of crimes fall under his new purview?<\/b><\/p>\n

Organized crime is not about the old-school Italian mob. It\u2019s more of a hybrid, which is international and far more high-tech, [involving] the dark web and cybercrime.<\/p>\n

How do Stabler and Benson find themselves collaborating again?<\/b><\/p>\n

The first eight episodes will be about one crime. Elliot was doing an investigation somewhere else, then followed a lead to New York, where it\u2019s causing him problems. Benson tries to help and then she\u2019s called off the case. He goes on to investigate with her help every once in a while.<\/p>\n

Who is the major character played by Dylan McDermott<\/a>? There\u2019s an Instagram photo of him looking like a rich big bad with two Irish wolfhounds! Is it safe to say he\u2019s more the American<\/i><\/a><\/b>Horror Story<\/i> Dylan McDermott than<\/b>The Practice<\/i>\u2018s Dylan McDermott?<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll give you that. You\u2019re warmer with the former! [Note:<\/i>Bones\u2019<\/a>Tamara Taylor<\/a> and<\/i>Ainsley Seiger are also cast regulars; Nick Creegan, Ben Chase, Charlotte Sullivan<\/a>, and Jaylin Fletcher recur.<\/i>]<\/p>\n

How does Stabler get along with his team?<\/b><\/p>\n

Good \u2014 for the most part. So far, they\u2019re a ragtag group that\u2019s been pulled together. Stabler was put out to pasture for a while, so I guess he\u2019s the old bull. If I said elder statesman, he\u2019d take that as an insult. There\u2019s one guy they seem to be setting up so that he and Elliot will be two alphas [facing off].<\/p>\n

How are your many fans reacting to your return to the Law & Order<\/i> family?<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve felt a lot of love and appreciation from fans over the years, but I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever felt it to this depth or this extent or this volume. It\u2019s very touching.<\/p>\n
