{"id":210066,"date":"2021-03-24T21:18:53","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T18:18:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/thein-zaw-released-from-detention-in-myanmar\/"},"modified":"2021-03-24T21:18:53","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T18:18:53","slug":"thein-zaw-released-from-detention-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/thein-zaw-released-from-detention-in-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"#Thein Zaw released from detention in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Thein Zaw released from detention in Myanmar<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>YANGON, Myanmar \u2014 Thein Zaw, a journalist for The Associated Press who was arrested more than three weeks ago while covering a protest against the coup in Myanmar, was released from detention on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Visibly thinner than before his arrest, Thein Zaw waved and smiled to photographers as he left Yangon\u2019s Insein Prison, notorious for decades for holding political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>His brothers and best friend took him home, which is an area of Yangon that has been placed under martial law. His parents prepared pork curry and fish curry for his first meal at home.<\/p>\n<p>His release was also emotional for lawyer Tin Zar Oo, who said she cried and jumped for joy when the judge announced the charges were being dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y. Thein Zaw looked at me, and I was even at a loss for words when they asked me if I had anything to say,\u201d she said. \u201cI hugged Thein Zaw, and we both cried with joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her client had been charged with violating a public order law that carries a penalty of up to three years\u2019 imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>He was one of nine <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> workers taken into custody during a Feb. 27 street protest in Yangon, the country\u2019s largest city, and had been held without bail. On Wednesday,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/world-news-aung-san-suu-kyi-yangon-myanmar-821a9905a595867da41c83978f1c5001\">more than 600 demonstrators were released<\/a>, a rare conciliatory gesture by the military that appeared aimed at placating the protest movement.<\/p>\n<p>The AP and many press freedom organizations have called for the release of Thein Zaw and the other detained members of the press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Associated Press is deeply relieved that AP journalist Thein Zaw has been freed from prison in Myanmar,\u201d said Ian Phillips, AP vice president for international <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>. \u201cOur relief is tempered by the fact that additional journalists there remain detained. A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/video-myanmar-police-chokehold-ap-photographer-thein-zaw-73adafb20dd94a92fd62de9116fcf0c3\">video shows that although he stepped to the side of the street\u00a0<\/a>to get out of their way, several police rushed over and surrounded him. One put him in a chokehold as he was handcuffed and then taken away.<\/p>\n<p>Tin Zar Oo saw her client for the first time since his arrest at a hearing on March 12 at which his pre-trial detention was renewed \u2014 and even then it was through a video link.<\/p>\n<p>The International Press Institute, headquartered in Vienna, welcomed the release, saying he \u201cwas detained for doing his job as a journalist and should never have been behind bars in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMyanmar must now immediately release all other journalists it is holding,\u201d said Scott Griffen, the institute\u2019 deputy director. \u201cThe military junta must stop all forms of harassment and intimidation of media covering demonstrations against the coup and end restrictions on publication and broadcasting by media outlets in the country.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
