This week, a record <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/prevention-risks\/covid-19-vaccine-treatment\/vaccine-rollout.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two million doses of COVID-19 vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrive to start what is an all-out push to get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as many<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first doses into as many Canadians as possible. By the Victoria Day weekend, the federal government estimates that more than 18 million doses will have arrived, and that number tops 21 million with the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three million AstraZeneca doses from our contracts as well as a loan from the United States expected by May.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more and more people get their first doses, the inevitable next question being asked is, \u201cWhat can I do now?\u201d especially as it may be up to 16 weeks before they get their crucial second doses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gerald Evans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the chair of the division of infectious diseases at Queen\u2019s University in Kingston, Ont., is asked that question \u201cprobably about two dozen times a day,\u201d he says with a laugh. Like most things pandemic-related, there\u2019s no short, sn<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y answer. But<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unlike many other questions,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there is good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Everyone hates a queue jumper. But are Canada\u2019s current vaccine queues fair?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI tell people, \u2018You can relax a bit,\u2019 \u201d he says. \u201cYou can be a lot less anxious, worried and stressed about the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact<\/span> [possibility] <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that if you get COVID, something bad is going to happen,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re going to be protected, even with a single dose, likely from getting severe illness that would make you sick and put you in hospital or maybe result in your death.\u201d<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he cautions that most of the data on the reduction of viral transmission is based on a two-dose regimen, there is now some first-dose data, especially from Israel and Britain\u2014the latter of which began its own \u201cfirst-dose-first\u201d rollout much earlier than Canada did\u2014which show big drops in hospitalizations and deaths, even after that first dose. Indeed, when a new outbreak at the Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna, B.C., occurred in early March, the residents who had received at least one dose were spared severe symptoms, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/not-all-covid-19-transmission-will-be-stopped-by-vaccines-b-c-s-top-doctor-warns-as-care-home-records-new-outbreak-1.5339720\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public health experts reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, there are three interacting issues for those who have received their first doses to consider: the effectiveness of the vaccines themselves, the sharp increase in variants of concern (VOCs) and the better weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0\u2018Who are you bubbling with?\u2019 How COVID-19 has changed language over the past year<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting a shot doesn\u2019t mean instant protection. Some of those Cottonwoods residents got COVID-19 because their doses hadn\u2019t reached maximum effectiveness yet. For first doses, that occurs 12 to 14 days after getting the shot, Evans explains. At that point, mRNA vaccines produced by Pfizer and Moderna achieve an efficacy of around 85 per cent, while the viral vector vaccines by AstraZeneca and Johnson &amp; Johnson have efficacy of closer to 70 per cent (data for the latter two was recorded when VOCs were more prevalent than during the trails of the mRNA vaccines).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just don\u2019t get complacent, experts warn. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/372\/bmj.n783\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Health England found a \u201cnotable\u201d rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in COVID-19 infections in people im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely after they received their first shots.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar trend occurred in Israel. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLooking at both strands of research\u2014from Israel and the U.K.\u2014it\u2019s reasonable to suggest people are letting their guard down after they have their first dose,\u201d warned James Rubin, a professor of psychology of emerging health risks at King\u2019s College London, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/372\/bmj.n783\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Medical Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe research has shown that immediately after a first jab people are more likely to be flouting social distancing, meeting people outside their household or bubble\u2014and meeting them indoors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some people want to hear, \u201cOh, I\u2019ve got my vaccine, I\u2019m in the free-and-clear,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Evans also says that people given first doses <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to be careful, as they can <\/span>still <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spread the virus to others who might suffer serious consequences: \u201cThe kinds of people we\u2019re seeing right now in the hospital with severe illness are, in fact, younger people, and they\u2019re not vaccinated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle to stop the pandemic is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, the variants of concern\u2014particularly B.1.1.7, which is more infectious and deadlier than the older strains\u2014are a growing threat in Canada as well countries with more advanced vaccination rollouts. On March 21, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashishkjha\/status\/1373610236221734912?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ashish Jha of Brown University <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out that the United States has been stuck at 50,000 new cases daily for the past two weeks even though another 20 million people were vaccinated during that time. The likely reason is that the relaxing of public health measures is helping the variants spread and grow, which counteracts the positive effect of the vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, Mother Nature may help curb Canada\u2019s third wave as well allow people to enjoy the benefits of vaccinations. Because of an effect called \u201cseasonal forcing,\u201d coronaviruses, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/339321846_Impact_of_seasonal_forcing_on_a_potential_SARS-CoV-2_pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like COVID-19 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the common cold, are less likely to be transmitted in the warm, humid weather of spring and summer, than they are in the cold, dry weather of winter. As well, \u201coutdoor transmission is extraordinarily uncommon,\u201d Evans explains. \u201cWhen you\u2019re outdoors, there is essentially almost infinite ventilation. Even short-range aerosols are quickly reduced to concentrations that don\u2019t transmit infections.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOutdoor activities are great,\u201d says Evans, a<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> member of Ontario\u2019s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cFor people with one dose? Absolutely. People with no doses? Yeah, it\u2019s pretty good. People with two doses? Yeah, outside is fantastic.\u201d<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many benefits that Evans thinks family barbecues and outdoor visits to relatives in long-term care homes should be fine<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the warmer weather, though the now-habitual safety precautions should continue, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as<\/span> including <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">masks. \u201cIf you\u2019ve got a mask on, you can be within three feet of each other [while outdoors],\u201d he says. He\u2019s less enthusiastic, however, about being in outdoor environments that have some sort of closure, such as a wall to stop wind from bothering customers on a restaurant patio, as some <\/span>of these <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can \u201calmost create a bit of an indoor environment outside.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His final message is to hold on, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/skepticalIDdoc\/status\/1373702978578882561?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equating our upcoming vaccinated summer with the open water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seen beyond the ice that still hugs the shores of many lakes and rivers in Canada: \u201cYou should still stick to your household, your bubble; wear your mask when you\u2019re out in public and you\u2019re out at a shop and store; and do all those good things that we\u2019ve been doing now, unfortunately, for almost a year,\u201d he says. \u201cUntil we get that second dose into lots of people.
