This time, it\u2019s the driver and passenger monitoring (in-cabin) camera that\u2019s in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>The concerns stem from the fact that Tesla is using a conventional video camera, rather than infrared alternatives that other carmakers use (but more on that later).<\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/epvmxh57cx?videoFoam=true&amp;autoplay=true&amp;silentAutoPlay=true\" title=\"Bumper 06 Video\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time video is being recorded, it can be accessed later,\u201d senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, John Davisson, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/privacy\/teslas-in-car-cameras-raise-privacy-concerns\/\">told Consumer Reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may be legal protections around who can access it and how, but there\u2019s always the possibility that insurance companies, police, regulators, and other parties in accidents will be able to obtain that data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The in-cabin camera is located in the rearview mirror of the Model 3 and Model Y. It\u2019s disabled by default, but if switched on it will capture and share video clips of the moments before an accident or when automatic braking is engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk has previously said that the camera is there for when Teslas are fully autonomous, and will be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/4\/5\/18296501\/tesla-internal-camera-rear-view-mirror-autonomous-ridesharing-service-driverless\">taking passengers for taxi rides<\/a>. But we know that\u2019s a long, long way off, so it seems a little premature.<\/p>\n<p>So, it begs the question of what Tesla might do with this data if one of its cars is involved in a crash.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose the driver is using Autopilot at the time, and is on their phone rather than looking at the road. Will Tesla use the video to prove the driver wasn\u2019t paying attention, and therefore its Autopilot system wasn\u2019t at fault? Your guess is as good as mine.<\/p>\n<p>Other carmakers have in-car cameras for monitoring drivers, so what about their systems?<\/p>\n<p>Good question. Indeed, other car brands do use devices for monitoring drivers to make sure they\u2019re paying attention to the road.<\/p>\n<p>However, those systems use infrared cameras and don\u2019t record any video. They work in real-time, and aren\u2019t storing any data.<\/p>\n<p>While Tesla\u2019s camera is aimed at the driver and their passengers, it\u2019s not a true driver monitoring system. Rather it seems to be more of a surveillance or evidence gathering tool, than a safety feature.<\/p>\n<p>The only driver monitoring system present in Tesla\u2019s vehicles is the torque sensor on the steering wheel, which was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/article\/18168\/people-keep-coming-up-with-ways-to-fool-teslas-autopilot\">once hacked with an orange<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has previously <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/technology-and-iiot\/article\/22025462\/tesla-criticized-for-blaming-autopilot-death-on-driver\">blamed drivers for not paying attention<\/a> to the road, when vehicles have crashed with Autopilot engaged.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a huge leap to assume that Tesla would use video footage to indemnify itself of any responsibility when such incidents occur.<\/p>\n<p>And we haven\u2019t even considered the notion of someone hacking the camera remotely to spy on your whilst driving. It might be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kenriko.com\/products\/tesla-model-3-interior-camera-privacy-cover\">worth putting a bit of tape<\/a> over that little lens piece for now.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
