“#’The Walking Dead’ creator Robert Kirkman on ‘Invincible’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Comic book and TV creator Robert Kirkman\u2019s new superhero show \u201cInvincible\u201d has been a long time coming.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kirkman, best known for \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d franchise, penned the comics that serve as the basis for both shows in 2003 \u2014 but while \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d first hit the screen in 2010, \u201cInvincible\u201d premieres Friday (March 26) on Amazon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a little bit more of an uphill battle,\u201d Kirkman, 42, told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere weren\u2019t a lot of zombie shows before \u2018The Walking Dead,\u2019 but in the early 2000s there was already a ton of superhero movies<\/a> in production, and superheroes broke out on TV in a big way. So it was always hard to find that space for \u2018Invincible.\u2019 I also was adamant about making sure that it wasn\u2019t rushed or haphazard. \u2018Invincible\u2019 is as important to me \u2014 if not more \u2014 than \u2018The Walking Dead.\u2019 It was something that I spent a good 16 years of my life working on, and so I wanted to make sure that we did it right.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Amazon series, which Kirkman created based on his comic of the same name, is an adult animated show centered on teenager Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who is the son of powerful superhero Nolan Grayson aka Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). As Mark begins to develop his own powers, he begins learning from his father and discovering secrets about his legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDoing it in animated form for television was the way that we were able to be the most faithful to what we accomplished in the comics,\u201d said Kirkman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to Yeun and Simmons, the show\u2019s star-studded voice cast includes Sandra Oh (as Mark\u2019s mom Debbie) and Mark Hamill (as superhero costume designer Art Rosenbaum), among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fortunate that when people are like, \u2018Oh, the guy that did \u2018The Walking Dead\u2019 is doing something else,\u2019 that seems to get people\u2019s attention, which is great,\u201d said Kirkman. \u201cAnd also once you have somebody of Steven Yeun\u2019s caliber, that gives other people comfort, like \u2018If he\u2019s going to be part of this, it\u2019s safe for me to.\u2019 He puts a tremendous amount of effort in building his characters. He really showed that on \u2018The Walking Dead\u2019 with his character Glenn. It\u2019s hard to pick the actor that\u2019s going to headline your show\u00a0 \u2014 if you chose poorly, it can sink the entire show. Steven Yeun was just one of the most talented actors that I\u2019d ever worked with. I knew that he was the right guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the animated series, there\u2019s also a live action \u201cInvincible\u201d movie in the works, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached to write and direct (they\u2019ll also produce alongside Kirkman).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re planning on moving forward with that as soon as we can,\u201d said Kirkman. \u201cIt will be a completely different app<\/a>roach to the material [than the show]. It\u2019s really exciting to be going into this animated series with Amazon and know how we\u2019re going to adapt the comic book for that and how different it\u2019s going to be from what we end up doing with the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between \u201cInvincible,\u201d the ever-expanding \u201cWalking Dead\u201d universe and his ongoing comics, Kirkman isn\u2019t sure how many projects he has going on simultaneously, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d guess maybe double digits most days, which is a little alarming. But I enjoy what I\u2019m doing. I don\u2019t really keep track. I think if I actually had a number in my head, I would find it a little daunting and wouldn\u2019t get work done. But I like to multitask. I\u2019m bouncing from project to project throughout every day, which keeps me entertained and engaged.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
