solar radiation, and we call that \u201csunlight.\u201d Likewise, Wi-Fi uses radio waves, which are a form of radiation. Despite what some snake oil salesmen may tell you, you don\u2019t need an EMF shield, \u201crouter guard,\u201d or \u201cWi-Fi radiation shield.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if you did want to remove Wi-Fi from your home (and you don\u2019t need to!), you\u2019d be better off switching to a wired router and ditching all your Wi-Fi hardware. Skip the \u201crouter cages\u201d and \u201crouter covers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CBlocking_Wi-Fi_Radiation%E2%80%9D_Means_%E2%80%9CBlocking_Wi-Fi%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cBlocking Wi-Fi Radiation\u201d Means \u201cBlocking Wi-Fi\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>EMF shields or wireless \u201crouter guards\u201d promise to block Wi-Fi radiation. There\u2019s just one problem: \u201cWi-Fi radiation\u201d just means \u201cWi-Fi radio waves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not new, of course: AM and FM radio also use radio waves, for example. So do walkie-talkies, cordless telephones, wireless baby monitors, and many other common technologies that we\u2019ve lived with for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Since Wi-Fi is just radio waves (a type of radiation), blocking Wi-Fi radiation just means blocking Wi-Fi. If a router guard promises to \u201cblock 85% of Wi-Fi radiation,\u201d that\u2019s just another way of saying that it will make your wireless router operate at 15% efficiency.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wi-Fi_Isnt_Dangerous\"><\/span>Wi-Fi Isn\u2019t Dangerous<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Wi-Fi radiation isn\u2019t dangerous to you. We encourage you to read our full explanation of why Wi-Fi radiation isn\u2019t dangerous. In short, the dangerous type of radiation is ionizing radiation\u2014like X-rays. Ionizing radiation has enough energy to \u201cionize\u201d atoms and other molecules by knocking an electron out of their orbit.<\/p>\n<p>However, Wi-Fi counts as \u201cnon-ionizing radiation\u201d\u2014like AM and FM radio. A Faraday cage is an enclosure that blocks electromagnetic fields. That\u2019s why it\u2019s called an \u201cEMF shield\u201d\u2014it functions as a shield against electromagnetic fields (EMFs).<\/p>\n<p>This is a fancy way of saying that a \u201crouter guard\u201d that you place around your router just interferes with the Wi-Fi signal, either weakening it dramatically or blocking it entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Why would someone want to do this? Well, if they believed that Wi-Fi was dangerous, such a device might be valuable! But knowing that Wi-Fi isn\u2019t dangerous, we see that there is little point to such a device.<\/p>\n<p>Such devices are unfortunately being widely advertised online, including on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=wifi+router+guard&amp;tag=hotoge-20\">Amazon<\/a>. While we definitely believe in the right of everyone to buy these kinds of products if they want them\u2014that\u2019s freedom, after all\u2014we think you should know that these products are a waste of your money. Even if you believe the premise that Wi-Fi is dangerous, these Wi-Fi shields don\u2019t make much sense.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Again_Wi-Fi_Is_Just_Radio_Waves_Which_Are_Radiation\"><\/span>Again, Wi-Fi Is Just Radio Waves, Which Are Radiation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Wi-Fi is just radio waves, and radio waves are a type of radiation. A Wi-Fi router uses electromagnetic frequencies, also known as \u201cradio waves\u201d or \u201cWi-Fi radiation,\u201d to communicate with your devices and give them access to the internet. That\u2019s all it does.<\/p>\n<p>Operating a Wi-Fi router and placing it in a Faraday cage is like setting up a radio broadcast tower and enclosing it in a cage that prevents people from receiving its signal. It doesn\u2019t make any sense.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_the_Router_Guard_Works_It_Makes_Your_Wi-Fi_Worse\"><\/span>If the Router Guard Works, It Makes Your Wi-Fi Worse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you look at the reviews for such devices on Amazon, you\u2019ll see many people leaving one-star reviews complaining that the Wi-Fi shield made their WI-Fi worse. Perhaps it now only works in the same room as the Wi-Fi router, when without the Faraday cage, the Wi-Fi offers a strong signal in every room in their home.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s by design. That\u2019s how it works! It works by inhibiting your Wi-Fi signal. Less Wi-Fi radiation escapes the cage, which means that your Wi-Fi is weaker.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_Some_Router_Guards_Promise_Strong_Wi-Fi\"><\/span>But Some Router Guards Promise Strong Wi-Fi!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you click around and look at these products, you\u2019ll find that some router guards promise not to interfere with your Wi-Fi. They promise to reduce Wi-Fi radiation while giving you a strong signal. Some products might even have reviews saying, \u201cThis product works, unlike other router guards that made my Wi-Fi worse!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How can this be?<\/p>\n<p>Well, perhaps the manufacturer is lying and the router guard <em>will<\/em> actually make your Wi-Fi worse once you set it up.<\/p>\n<p>However, if a particular router guard doesn\u2019t interfere with your Wi-Fi signal at all,\u00a0<em>that means that it isn\u2019t doing anything<\/em>. It\u2019s not actually blocking radio waves (radiation) if it doesn\u2019t have any effect on your signal.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one Wi-Fi EMF shield interferes less with Wi-Fi than another one. That just means that the radiation shield that gives you a better Wi-Fi signal is blocking less Wi-Fi radiation than the one giving you a weaker signal, which is blocking more Wi-Fi radiation.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no free lunch. Wi-Fi is radio waves, which are radiation. Blocking Wi-Fi radiation means blocking your Wi-Fi signal. If you could block 100% of Wi-Fi radiation, you\u2019d make your Wi-Fi router 100% useless.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_Wired_Internet_If_You_Dont_Want_Wi-Fi\"><\/span>Try Wired Internet If You Don\u2019t Want Wi-Fi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Even if Wi-Fi radiation were a concern\u2014and we\u2019re not saying it is\u2014a Wi-Fi EMF shield or \u201crouter guard\u201d wouldn\u2019t make any sense as a product.<\/p>\n<p>There are several options. Either you have an ineffective shield that gives you good Wi-Fi because it isn\u2019t actually blocking anything, an effective EMF shield that is so good that it prevents you from using Wi-Fi, or a shield that\u2019s somewhere in the middle, giving you a weak WI-Fi signal but still allowing some of that \u201cWi-Fi radiation\u201d (in other words, the Wi-Fi signal) to escape the cage.<\/p>\n<p>If you were concerned about this, you could ditch the Wi-Fi router and get a wired router where you connect your computers and other devices with Ethernet cables instead. You could then avoid using Wi-Fi and prevent your router from emitting any \u201cWi-Fi radiation\u201d (in other words, Wi-Fi signal).<\/p>\n<p>But you don\u2019t need to do any of this, because Wi-Fi isn\u2019t dangerous.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Or_Try_the_National_Radio_Quiet_Zone\"><\/span>Or Try the National Radio Quiet Zone<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-720128 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/telescope.jpg\" alt=\"The Robert C. Chase\/Shutterstock.com<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even if you didn\u2019t use your own Wi-Fi router, you would still be exposed to other forms of radio waves (radiation).\u00a0For example, this includes Wi-Fi signals from your neighbors, cell phone signals, Bluetooth device communications, FM radio, AM radio, walkie-talkie signals, cordless phones, wireless baby monitors, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., a good way to avoid a lot of this would be to move to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2013\/04\/green-bank-w-v-where-the-electrosensitive-can-escape-the-modern-world.html\">the U.S. National Radio Quiet Zone<\/a>, a place in the country where most types of EMF radiation (including Wi-Fi and cell phone signals) are restricted to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_National_Radio_Quiet_Zone\">reduce disturbances<\/a> to sensitive equipment used for scientific research and military intelligence gathering in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you don\u2019t need to move there\u2014because there\u2019s no evidence that these types of radiation are dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>But if you did believe that radio waves were a problem, a router shield wouldn\u2019t be a good solution, because you\u2019d only be dealing with a small part of the problem.
