There\u2019s no luck of the Irish this March from <\/span>Into The Dark<\/i><\/b>, since <\/span>Emma Tammi<\/b>\u2019s second directorial invitation is about shapeshifter folklore\u2014St. Patrick\u2019s Day was <\/span>last year\u2019s edition<\/span>. With season 2 wrapp<\/a>ing its slate, Hulu\u2019s holiday horror anthology avoids any serious double-dipping by ignoring inebriated March madness for a second thematic instance. <\/span>Adam Mason<\/b>\u2019s screenplay is more in line with last May\u2019s <\/span>Delivered<\/i><\/b> (also Tammi), once again jeopardizing a mother-child relationship that\u2019s consciously more heartfelt than other months doused in gore, humor, or approaches less dramatically dire. It\u2019s Tammi\u2019s wheelhouse dating back to <\/span>The Wind<\/span><\/i>, so why deviate? After a string of franchise lows, <\/span>Blood Moon<\/i><\/b> brings a little bite back into Blumhouse\u2019s monthly program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our introduction to Esme (<\/span>Megalyn Echikunwoke<\/b>) and son Luna (<\/span>Yonas Kibreab<\/b>) is a blood-stained bedroom, Esme with a shotgun, and an animal carrier. It\u2019s a flashback, we learn, as Esme and now ten-year-old Luna drive into another nameless town with non-descript rural charms, where they can live in peace. We immedia<\/a>tely get the sense that Esme desires to keep Luna separated from society, given his homeschooling, one circled day per month on the calendar he\u2019s forced under lockdown, and the \u201clion-sturdy\u201d cage Esme erects in her basement. Pretty damning evidence that Luna is more than just your average, rebellious almost-teen. What Esme does is for her family\u2019s benefit\u2014or those put in danger when the lunar cycle reaches its climax.<\/span>
\nSince <\/span>Blood Moon<\/span><\/i> is very obviously about a changeling child, it\u2019s enough to confirm that ideas about werewolves or animorphs are in the correct ballpark. It\u2019s no spoiler; Esme wastes zero time engaging with the local hardware store owner (played by <\/span>Marco Rodriguez)<\/b> because she requires supplies for a \u201cchicken coop.\u201d That\u2019s not to say <\/span>Blood Moon<\/span><\/i> is Tyler MacIntyre\u2019s <\/span>Good Boy<\/span><\/i> redone because Tammi\u2019s approach remains more interested in exploring both the tenderness of monstrous bonds and bloodline devotion at stake. It isn\u2019t an outright unleashing of a pint-sized beast as much as it\u2019s this guardian arc about maternal instincts and parental sacrifices.<\/span><\/p>\n

Given COVID-19 production safeguards, <\/span>Blood Moon<\/span><\/i> doesn\u2019t boast an impressive body count or massacres\u2014not that previous <\/span>Into The Dark<\/span><\/i> productions benefit from massive set pieces. I say this to properly emphasize how the creature dynamic isn\u2019t particularly ravenous. Still, Tammi finds intrigue despite a tumbleweed community where Esme can only interact with so many characters at a time. Whether that\u2019s warning her watering hole boss Sam (<\/span>Joshua Dov<\/b>) about minding his hands or she\u2019ll file a sexual harassment lawsuit, or outright threatening to slit Sheriff Barlow Townes\u2019 <\/span>(Gareth Williams<\/b>) throat should his unwanted advances continue. Esme\u2019s traits are barbed, defensive, and on-edge with purpose, as Megalyn Echikunwoke projects a survival instinct that\u2019s worth a few direct hits when it comes to dialogue and imposed intensity in more character-driven scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n

So becomes <\/span>Blood Moon<\/span><\/i>, a thriller that\u2019s not exquisitely thrilling but successful in telling Esme\u2019s narrative from a place of outsider fears and internal unknowns. It\u2019s not particularly \u201cfestive\u201d in terms of <\/span>Into The Dark<\/span><\/i>\u2019s whole horror anthology concept, yet connections to nature and mysticism aren\u2019t unwelcome. As Tammi once accentuated pioneer isolation in <\/span>The Wind<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Blood Moon<\/span><\/i> feels like a modern counterpart with an animalistic bend where terror lurks within\u2014even worse, within something precious and innocent. Don\u2019t expect to behold <\/span>An American Werewolf In London<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>WolfCop<\/span><\/i> effects\u2014although that doesn\u2019t seem to matter given how Esme and Luna\u2019s bond is the driving force behind Tammi\u2019s vision and Mason\u2019s script.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blood Moon<\/span><\/i> is a more caged approach to transformation horror cinema, especially given on-set restrictions concerning characters per scene, behind-the-lens limits, and more. Emma Tammi could only use the \u201ctools\u201d available\u2014a pitstop hideaway that\u2019s barely inhabited, tempered payoffs, minimal escalation\u2014but Megalyn Echikunwoke and Yonas Kibreab navigate within the confines of interrupted youth, battle-scarred mothers, and the ultimate horror of what society would do if their secret were to be exposed. It\u2019s nothing ferociously forthcoming or reinventive, yet in comparison to other <\/span>Into The Dark<\/span><\/i> segments, <\/span>Blood Moon<\/span><\/i> develops intrigue even if adrenaline doesn\u2019t surge. A rare case where lacking frights serve a more impactful tale of mommy-kiddo hardships, despite a few chewed-up corpses still making their appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n
