Fans of the late, great Jessica Walter\u2019s work in comedies like \u201cArrested Development\u201d or \u201cArcher\u201d may forget that she earned a Golden Globe nod early on for her first major role as a deranged woman in 1971\u2019s \u201cPlay Misty for Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Walter\u2019s work on that film stuck with cult 1980s horror director Tom Holland, who wanted her to lend her voice to film a soon-to-be-iconic killer doll named Chucky.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was terrific,\u201d Holland told The Post of her stint as the serial killer doll.<\/p>\n

But ultimately, it wound up on the cutting room floor.<\/p>\n

For the unfamiliar: 1988\u2019s \u201cChild\u2019s Play\u201d centers around the aforementioned Lakeside Strangler Charles Lee Ray \u2014 memorably played by Brad Dourif \u2014 who, after being mortally wounded by police, uses voodoo to transfer his soul into a \u201cGood Guys\u201d doll, which then embarks on a murderous rampage.<\/p>\n

Dourif would go on to voice Chucky for six \u201cChild\u2019s Play\u201d sequels, inextricably linking him to the character. Fans of the franchise \u2014 and Walter \u2014 were stunned, then, to learn when Mental Floss\u2019 oral history of the original film<\/a> went viral in 2019 that Walter at one point took a swing at voicing the killer toy.<\/p>\n

Prior to the Mental Floss article, mentions of Walter\u2019s role in the film\u2019s production were largely buried in DVD commentary tracks and discussed mostly by fans on message boards for the series,<\/a> and the actress seems to have never addressed her work on the film directly in interviews.<\/p>\n

But Poughkeepsie native Holland, now 77, explained to The Post just how Walter\u2019s almost-role in the original \u201cChild\u2019s Play\u201d happ<\/a>ened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got into the post[-production] on it, and I needed to voice Chucky for the previews,\u201d Holland recalls. \u201cBrad Dourif wasn\u2019t available, he was filming \u2018Spontaneous Combustion\u2019 with Tobe Hooper, which is a terrible film. I can say that, because Tobe [who died in 2017] was my friend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought Jessica was absolutely brilliant in \u2018Play Misty for Me,\u2019 and I thought, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be interesting to try a woman\u2019s voice behind Chucky? Let\u2019s see how that works.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I had her in, and she voiced him, and she was terrific<\/em>,\u201d Holland continues. \u201cBut when I looked at it in a preview situation, it just didn\u2019t work with the character, because the doll was obviously a boy.\u201d<\/p>\n
