Now what?<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article__subhead\" itemprop=\"alternativeHeadline\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Based_on_Thursdays_hearing_on_Capitol_Hill_the_gloves_are_off_and_Big_Techs_party_could_be_ending\"><\/span>\n  Based on Thursday\u2019s hearing on Capitol Hill, the gloves are off and Big Tech\u2019s party could be ending<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"column column--full article__content\">\n<div id=\"js-article__body\" class=\"article__body article-wrap at16-col16 barrons-article-wrap\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0000211740\">\n<div class=\"barrons-article-ad-wrapper\">\n<div data-track=\"barrons-article-ad-wrap\" class=\"barrons-article-ad sticky_item\">\n<div class=\"barrons-main-article-ad-target sticky_target body_ad\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       The insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in January <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have been the last straw for Congress, which is poised to step in to try and put the brakes on Big Tech and its inability to stop misinformation and hate speech on its platforms.<\/p>\n<p> In a nearly six-hour virtual hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday, many lawmakers exhibited little or no patience with the chief executives of Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.03%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.00%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> Inc.<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.21%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Twitter Inc.<br \/>\n        TWTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203180645\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.39%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and the attempts by the companies to self-regulate. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Trump supporters stormed the Capitol complex on Jan. 6 as the 2020 election results were being ratified, falsely claiming the election was rigged, leaving five people dead. The terrifying incident was referred to or mentioned by several committee members, who blamed social-media companies as venues where the insurrectionists made their plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attack started and was nourished on your platforms,\u201d said Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., the committee\u2019s chairman, adding that the companies have in the past just \u201cshrugged off billion-dollar fines.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour business model itself has become the problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>How this committee and other legislative bodies in Congress plan to attack the business models of the social-media giants and Google\u2019s YouTube is another question, one that was not really answered Thursday. But there were references to at least two pieces of legislation in progress.<\/p>\n<p>One is the \u201cProtecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms Act, \u201d which was reintroduced this week and seeks to narrowly amend Section 230 of the Internet Communications Act of 1996, which gives companies immunity from liability for comments or actions made on their platforms.  The revised bill, co-authored by Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., and Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-N.J., seeks to hold large social-media platforms liable \u201cif their algorithms amplify misinformation that leads to offline violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., said she will introduce the \u201cOnline Consumer Protection Act\u201d to hold tech companies more accountable and weaken their liability shield, because \u201cthe witnesses here today have demonstrated time and time again that self-regulation has not worked. They must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: <\/strong> Section 230 and the fallout Big Tech may see after the Capitol insurrection<\/p>\n<p>Many of the committee members tried, often in vain, to get simple yes or no answers from Facebook\u2019s Mark Zuckerbug, Twitter\u2019s Jack Dorsey and Alphabet\u2019s Sundar Pichai on a variety of questions about potential reform, and what the companies have done since their last rounds of grilling. Some of the most interesting and apt comparisons, though, was comparing social media to Big Tobacco, which is now viewed as having created addictive products in cigarettes, through nicotine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBig Tech is handing our children a lit cigarette and they become hooked for life,\u201d said Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Calif., who pointedly asked each executive if they agreed that they made money from an addictive habit of its users on social media. All three said no to that question. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still not clear, though,  if the current proposed legislation \u2014 or any other new bills in the works \u2014 will successfully wend their way through both the House and the Senate.  <\/p>\n<p>One thing was clear, though \u2014 Congress has had enough from Big Tech. How that shakes out over the next year is anyone\u2019s guess, whether it\u2019s through bills that seek to limit Section 230 or ongoing antitrust investigations.
