At the same time, a quick rise in U.S. interest rates has undercut those advances.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government reported the number of workers filing for unemployment benefits\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pandemics-jobless-claims-unemployment-coronavirus-pandemic-economy-75c27fd877d7a07ba2be1bba59cd82ca\" class=\"icon none\">fell last week to its lowest level<\/a>\u00a0since before the pandemic, helping to boost sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough very much in the price, investors did take solace as the positive outlook for vaccines amid President Joe Biden\u2019s plan for an \u2018economic rejuvenation,\u2019 which underpinned risk overnight,\u201d Stephen Innes of Axi said in a commentary.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo\u2019s Nikkei 225 index<br \/>\n        NIK,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210597971\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.60%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       surged 1.5% and the Hang Seng<br \/>\n        HSI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598030\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.76%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       in Hong Kong picked up 1.4% . In Seoul, the Kospi<br \/>\n        180721,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598069\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.92%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 0.9%. The Shanghai Composite index<br \/>\n        SHCOMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598127\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.65%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       climbed 1.4% and India\u2019s Sensex<br \/>\n        1,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210597966\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.37%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 0.9%.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.52%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 0.5% to 3,909.52 after having been down 0.9% in the early going. But it was still on track for a loss for the week.<\/p>\n<p>Investors have been moving money away from expensive tech stocks as part of a broader shift to stocks tied more closely to economic growth. There\u2019s a good chance the recovery could be surprisingly strong with little interference from the Federal Reserve, said Andrew Slimmon, portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a very clear message that the Fed is going to sit back and let the economy grow at a hotter rate because their number one priority is unemployment,\u201d he said. \u201cThat means there\u2019s a good chance the economy overshoots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.62%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 0.6% to 32,619.48. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.12%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       recovered from early losses to edged 0.1% higher, to 12,977.68. The Russell 2000 index<br \/>\n        RUT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598147\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+2.29%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       of smaller stocks outdid the rest of the market, climbing 2.3% to 2,183.12.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>The 10-year Treasury yield<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">1.629%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which helps set rates for all kinds of loans, was steady at 1.62%. Treasury yields have been broadly rising with expectations for stronger economic growth and the inflation that may accompany it.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the upbeat jobless report, another report said\u00a0the U.S. economy grew\u00a0at a faster pace at the end of 2020 than earlier estimated.<\/p>\n<p>In other trading Friday, U.S. benchmark crude oil<br \/>\n        CL.1,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211629951\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.28%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 59 cents to $59.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It sank $2.62 on Thursday to $58.56 per barrel.<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude<br \/>\n        BRN00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209704782\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.10%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       the standard for international pricing, picked up 47 cents to $62.67 per barrel.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. dollar rose to 109.26 Japanese yen<br \/>\n        USDJPY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210561789\/realtime\/sampled\" class=\"positive\">+0.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      from 109.19 yen late Thursday.
