What\u2019s talent got to do with it? Everything.<\/p>\n

Also determination, resilience, and a survivor\u2019s courage to speak out against domestic abuse, reclaiming a life and career that would soar to unimaginable heights. \u201cI had an abusive life. There\u2019s no other way to tell the story,\u201d concludes the still-glam octogenarian superstar Tina Turner in HBO\u2019s Tina<\/em>, a triumphant biographical documentary.<\/p>\n

On stage, she has always been electrifying, as the blazing core of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s and \u201970s before achieving global superstardom on her own, filling arenas and fulfilling her professional dream \u2014 \u201cto be the first Black rock-\u2018n\u2019-roll singer to pack places like the Stones.\u201d A softer, more reflective side emerges in Tina<\/em>, which begins with her happ<\/a>y ending, as she candidly speaks from her palatial estate in Zurich, Switzerland.<\/p>\n

She recalls first revealing her grim history to People<\/em> magazine in 1981: the beatings she endured while married to Ike, her financial struggles following the divorce. \u201cI was living a life of death,\u201d she says in tape recordings. \u201cI didn\u2019t exist. But I survived it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In what playwright Katori Hall describes as \u201ca coming of age at 40 years old,\u201d Turner reinvented herself into a rock goddess \u2014 the concert footage is as explosive as ever \u2014 while trying to put what she felt as the curse of her past behind her: with an autobiography, followed by the Oscar-nominated film What\u2019s Love Got to Do With It<\/em>, which only magnified her iconic status as a symbol of strength. The film ends with a victory lap as she returns to the U.S. to attend the Broadway opening of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical<\/em>, the bio-musical which was still packing the house with Tony buzz for its star (Adrienne Warren) when the pandemic shut everything down.<\/p>\n

Then and now, the real Tina Turner is simply the best.<\/p>\n
