Ex-ICE boss: No, the Border Is Not Closed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite what Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas claims, \u201cthe border is not closed, and it is not secure,\u201d declares former Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan at FoxNews.com<\/a>. Mayorkas pretends President Biden isn\u2019t to blame for the \u201csurge of \u00admigrants across our border,\u201d but he is \u201chiding the real truth.\u201d For example, Biden\u2019s team claims it\u2019s \u201cadhering to the law\u201d in order to give immigrants due process on asylum \u2014 but then it ignores \u201cthe final decisions of that very same due process.\u201d Most important, when you make promises of \u00addeportation moratoriums and free health care, \u201cthousands of unaccompanied children\u201d and \u201clarge family groups\u201d are sure to come. The result: a humanitarian and \u201cnational-security crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media<\/a> watch: Libel Law Harms Democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Federalist\u2019s Mollie Hemingway cites<\/a> a judge\u2019s \u201cblistering dissent\u201d in a recent defamation case, in which he warned of the dangers of control of major media by one political party. The New York Times and The Washington Post \u201care virtually Democratic Party broadsheets,\u201d fumed Judge Laurence Silberman of the US Court of App<\/a>eals for the DC Circuit. Most large US papers and Silicon Valley also lean that way, as does \u201cnearly all television.\u201d As a result, libelous stories mainly harm Republicans, which is why, he concluded, the Supreme Court should revisit its standard for libel: \u201cWhen the media has proven its willingness \u2014 if not eagerness \u2014 to so distort, it is a profound mistake to stand by unjustified legal rules that serve only to enhance the press\u2019 power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Dems Want the Migrant Surge<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden has tried to blame the previous administration for the crisis at the southern border \u2014 yet The Chicago Tribune\u2019s John Kass \u00adrecalls<\/a> that way back in September 2019, Biden encouraged migrants to come: \u201cIf you want to flee and you\u2019re fleeing oppression, you should come,\u201d said Biden \u2014 and come they did, \u201cwearing T-shirts reading, \u2018Biden, please let us in.\u2019\u200a\u201d The new president \u201cbegan to unravel and end a Trump-administration policy that kept the border contained\u201d as soon as he took office, and all \u201cDemocrats see in this surge is a wave of potential new Democratic voters.\u201d It turns out that this \u201cplanned disaster\u201d of \u201cporous borders and a surge of the desperate\u201d is \u201call policy, not coincidence. There are no coincidences in politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Albany watch: Cuomo\u2019s Successor?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gov. Cuomo is in trouble, observes National Review\u2019s Dan McLaughlin<\/a>, and \u201cunlike presidents, governors are not so impossible to oust\u201d \u2014 with state chief executives in Missouri, Alabama and Oregon booted from office in recent years. As \u00adCuomo wobbles, attention turns to Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who would take over, triggering a \u201cmad scramble\u201d for the 2022 race. Yet there \u201cis no guarantee that she would be able to avoid a fractious primary challenge. . . . In fact, in 2018, Hochul faced a stiff progressive primary challenge of her own for the lieutenant governorship from New York City councilman Jumaane Williams.\u201d She is no moderate, let alone conservative, but rather \u201ca Cuomo- or [Sen. Chuck] Schumer-style liberal.\u201d Still, her mild gestures at cultural conservatism may be enough to \u201cget her run out of the party today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Wokesters Aim To Cancel \u2018Intent\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cRevolutionaries\u201d are \u201cdevouring their own over issues of race,\u201d argues Commentary\u2019s Christine Rosen<\/a>. And with \u201ceach cancellation, we have further proof that context, intent and nuance are the enemies of the ideologue.\u201d Alexi McCammond, \u201ca young black reporter\u201d chosen as Teen Vogue\u2019s new editor, was fired \u201cwhen disgruntled staffers found anti-Asian and homophobic tweets\u201d she had posted in college. And San Francisco Board of Education official Alison Collins, also black, is being removed over her own anti-Asian tweets. They both \u201cpleaded for the public to consider the intent of their words,\u201d but \u201canyone with authoritarian tendencies has a stake in undermining intent\u201d as a defense for \u201caccusations of racism.\u201d Those who \u201cuse spurious allegations of racism\u201d to accrue power see intent and \u201ccontext as the enemy.\u201d <\/p>\n
