{"id":211754,"date":"2021-03-26T18:11:22","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T15:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/astronomers-capture-new-polarized-view-of-a-black-hole\/"},"modified":"2021-03-26T18:11:22","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T15:11:22","slug":"astronomers-capture-new-polarized-view-of-a-black-hole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/astronomers-capture-new-polarized-view-of-a-black-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"#Astronomers capture new polarized view of a black hole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Astronomers capture new polarized view of a black hole<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/black-hole-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Scientists\u00a0from the international Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration announced Wednesday that they had been able to\u00a0map\u00a0the magnetic fields around a\u00a0black hole\u00a0using polarized light waves for the first time, releasing a stunning image of the supermassive object\u00a0at the center of the Messier 87 (M87) galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>The team of more than 300 researchers\u00a0had produced the first-ever image of a black hole \u2013\u00a0from\u00a055 million light-years away \u2013\u00a0in April of 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers published their most recent observations in two separate papers in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eventhorizontelescope.org\/latest\">The\u00a0Astrophysical Journal<\/a>, which they say are key to understanding how the M87 galaxy is able to \u201claunch energetic jets from its core.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From data first collected in 2017, the scientists discovered that a significant fraction of the light at the\u00a0black hole\u2019s\u00a0near-horizon region was polarized.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microscopyu.com\/techniques\/polarized-light\/introduction-to-polarized-light\">Light becomes polarized<\/a>\u00a0when passing through certain filters or when it is emitted in hot regions of space that are magnetized.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/air-and-space\/astronomy\">Astronomers<\/a>\u00a0were given a sharper look around the black hole and the ability to map the magnetic field lines in the surrounding area,\u00a0by examining how the light around it was polarized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese 1.3 mm wavelength observations revealed a compact asymmetric ring-like source morphology. This structure originates from synchrotron emission produced by relativistic plasma located in the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te vicinity of the black hole,\u201d the group stated in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/abe71d#apjlabe71ds7\">its observational publication<\/a>. \u201cHere we present the corresponding linear-polarimetric EHT images of the center of M87. We find that only a part of the ring is significantly polarized. The resolved fractional linear polarization has a maximum located in the southwest part of the ring, where it rises to the level of ~15 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group\u00a0also noted that the polarization position angles are arranged in an almost \u201cazimuthal pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/azimuth#learn-more\">The azimuth<\/a>\u00a0is the angle between a fixed point like true North,\u00a0measured clockwise\u00a0around the observer\u2019s horizon and a celestial body.<\/p>\n<p>The team wrote that it had performed \u201cquantitative\u00a0measurements of relevant polarimetric properties of the compact emission\u201d and found \u201cevidence for the temporal evolution of the\u00a0polarized source structure\u201d over the course of a week.<\/p>\n<p>The data was then carried out by using multiple independent imaging and modeling techniques.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eventhorizontelescope.org\/blog\/astronomers-image-magnetic-fields-edge-m87s-black-hole\">an accompanying release<\/a>, the collaboration explained that the energy jets emerging from M87\u2019s core extend at least 5,000 light-years from its center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While most matter near the edge of a black hole falls into it, some of the surrounding particles are blown out in the opposite direction in jets.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers still don\u2019t fully understand this process, nor how matter falls into the black hole, but the new EHT image provides information about the structure of the magnetic fields just outside the black hole.<\/p>\n<p>Only theoretical models with strongly magnetized gas could explain the event, the release says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll\u00a0astronomical objects from the\u00a0Earth\u00a0to the\u00a0Sun\u00a0to galaxies have magnetic fields.\u00a0In the case of black holes, these magnetic fields can control how rapidly they consume the matter falling onto them and how they eject some of that matter into narrow beams <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing at close to the speed of light,\u201d\u00a0Geoffrey C. Bower, EHT project scientist at the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in\u00a0Hawaii,\u00a0told Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> via email on Thursday.\u00a0\u201cWe showed that the fields are indeed strong enough to play an important role in how this black hole eats its lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EHT collaboration is an evolving network of telescopes across\u00a0Chile,\u00a0Spain, Antarctica,\u00a0Greenland,\u00a0France, Hawaii,\u00a0Arizona\u00a0and\u00a0Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>In order to observe the M87 galaxy, the collaboration linked eight\u00a0telescopes\u00a0to create the EHT: a \u201cvirtual\u00a0Earth-sized telescope\u201d with resolution\u00a0\u201cequivalent to that needed to measure the length of a credit card on the surface of the\u00a0moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis setup allowed the team to directly observe the black hole shadow and the ring of light around it, with the new [polarized-light] image clearly showing that the ring is magnetized,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has ever made this kind of image before,\u201d Bower said. \u201cRemarkably, the data forming this image is the same that was used to make the iconic first image of a black hole released two years ago.
