“#NBCUniversal is scrubbing racist scenes from WWE matches<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

NBCUniversal is quietly scrubbing racist, risqu\u00e9 scenes from classic WWE matches before it adds the wrestling network\u2019s massive trove of old footage to its new Peacock streaming service.<\/p>\n

According to wrestling fan site, PWInsider<\/a>, Peacock has deleted a match from the 1990\u2019s\u00a0\u201cWrestleMania VI,\u201d which featured a match between\u00a0Roddy Piper and Bad News<\/a> Brown that included Piper, a white wrestler, \u00a0painting half his face black\u00a0while facing off against Brown, a black wrestler. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hear Bad News Brown, how he\u2019s talking about Harlem, and how he\u2019s proud to be from Harlem,\u201d Piper said during the pre-match interview, which was also removed from the service. \u201cNow I can stand here, and I can be black! I can be white! Don\u2019t make no difference to me. \u2026 It\u2019s what\u2019s inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

A source familiar with the situation told The Post that the Peacock is reviewing all 17,000 hours of WWE content to ensure it aligns with its standards and practices. WWE is also being made aware of any edits.<\/p>\n

NBCUniversal\u2019s nascent streaming service nabbed the exclusive US rights to WWE Network in January. Those new and archived matches became available to stream starting March 18.<\/p>\n

Another deleted scene was from 2005\u2019s \u201cSurvivor Series<\/a> 19,\u201d in which WWE CEO Vince McMahon, who is playing up the role of a corporate villain persona, said the N-word to a shocked John Cena. He then strutted past Booker T, a black wrestler, who said: \u201cTell me he didn\u2019t just say\u00a0that<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, a WWE spokesperson\u00a0defended\u00a0McMahon<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0TMZ, calling it \u201can outlandish and satirical skit involving fictional characters, similar to that of many script<\/a>ed television shows and movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the years, there have been many other racist and offensive moments, which are sure to keep the Peacock busy.<\/p>\n

Peacock, which costs $4.99 a month, has a dedicated WWE section where customers can browse and access every pay-per-view event in the last calendar year plus current or recent episodes of WWE original series, such as \u201cSteve Austin\u2019s The Broken Skull Sessions,\u201d \u201cWWE Chronicle\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cWWE Icons.\u201d <\/p>\n

Peacock is continually adding WWE Network content and will eventually include every WWE, WCW and ECW PPV event in history, according to the company.<\/p>\n

Peacock said its goal is to have all the classic content reviewed and available to stream on demand before\u00a0\u201cSummerSlam\u201d\u00a0in August.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
