\n The Yankees had their first official workout of spring training 2.0, playing and working out in an empty Yankee Stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was definitely different,\u2019\u2019 Jordan Montgomery said. \u201cBut it\u2019s just like working in Tampa in an empty stadium. You try to get your work in, stay focused and stay safe as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike the numerous back fields the Yankees are accustomed to at their complex in Tampa, they had to use just the one field at Yankee Stadium as they adjust to their new situation.<\/p>\n

After the first day, manager Aaron Boone said he was pleased with how efficient they were.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it went pretty well,\u2019\u2019 said Boone, who acknowledged Masahiro Tanaka getting hit by a Giancarlo Stanton liner early in the workout changed the tenor of the day. \u201cMasahiro getting hit took the air out of it and put a little fear in everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he liked what he saw from the work the team put in.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom an operational standpoint, I thought we were in good shape,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cWe used four mounds for bullpens and that worked well. It was a little bit of a longer day for our coaching staff, but we were in a good spot facility-wise with the reps we needed to get.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the team would have to get \u201ccreative\u201d with how they worked and with various team-building exercises, calling the situation \u201ca whole different animal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Montgomery said the toughest adjustment so far has been the ban on spitting and licking fingers on the mound.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been doing better,\u2019\u2019 Montgomery said.<\/p>\n

Aaron Hicks added it took a while to get used to wearing masks while working out indoors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the new normal,\u2019\u2019 Hicks said. \u201cIt takes a while to get adjusted on the baseball field. You want to engage in conversation and you\u2019re told to stay at a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was careful while working out indoors in Arizona and believes the team will do the same this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely been a conversation, to honor each other,\u2019\u2019 Hicks said. \u201cWe all need to be accountable on and off the field. We all want to win and want to be here. The objective here is to win a championship. We need everybody to be healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aaron Hicks, coming back from Tommy John surgery, said he felt \u201cgame<\/a>-ready\u201d but admitted he still hasn\u2019t found total consistency with his throwing following the October procedure. <\/p>\n

Asked if he was throwing \u201c100 percent,\u201d Hicks responded: \u201cOne hundred percent? It takes a while. I feel game-ready right now to compete and be consistent in the outfield.\u201d<\/p>\n

The issue right now, Hicks said, is velocity.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome come out, some don\u2019t,\u2019\u2019 Hicks said. \u201cThere\u2019s some inconsistency. That\u2019s pretty normal through the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hicks added he\u2019s been following the nationwide protests closely after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which led to more focus on the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel it\u2019s a pretty strong movement right now,\u2019\u2019 Hicks said. \u201cIt\u2019s something I definitely want to be a part of. It\u2019s something that\u2019s been going on throughout my life: black lives going unnoticed.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
