“#Inside look at what makes Knicks\u2019 World Wide Wes\u2019 a polarizing figure<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Last week\u2019s Knicks press release quoted new executive VP William Wesley on his \u201clong history with and respect for Jim Dolan.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Sources confirm Wesley has been in the Knicks owner\u2019s ear for 15 years, working behind the scenes. As is his custom.<\/p>\n

A Knicks coach from the Glen Grunwald era verified the influence of \u201cWorld Wide Wes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we were there, I was told he listened to \u2018World Wide Wes\u2019 more than he did Grunwald,\u201d the coach told The Post.<\/p>\n

Indeed, Wesley has been free with advice for Dolan, but not all of it constructive.<\/p>\n

The Post has learned Wesley was a driving force behind Dolan moving on from Grunwald after a 54-28 season four days before the 2013 training camp. Wesley recommended bringing back Steve Mills, citing stronger connections.<\/p>\n

At the time, The Post reported Grunwald\u2019s firing as linked to 2015 free-agent aspirations. In addition, the new chief needed to prepare for a bid to keep Carmelo Anthony in the ensuing summer of 2014.<\/p>\n

Anthony was represented by Creative Artists Agency, and Mills was reputed to have close ties to CAA. (Wesley, according to a source, served as a chief confidant of Anthony\u2019s during his Knicks stint.)<\/p>\n

Now CAA is officially running the Knicks with the Leon Rose-Wesley tandem. After Rose agreed to terms in February, The Post quoted a source, stating, \u201cMSG and CAA have been in bed for years. This shouldn\u2019t be surprising.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Wesley\u2019s push to remove Grunwald didn\u2019t work out. The Knicks have missed the playoffs seven straight seasons since his ouster, though Dolan deviated six months after firing Grunwald to bring in Phil Jackson as president.<\/p>\n

After all his failures, Dolan is calling upon Rose and Wesley to call all the shots as they attempt to repair the Knicks\u2019 downtrodden image with a pizzazz hiring.<\/p>\n

The press release did not mention Wesley\u2019s past credentials \u2014 an indicator of his subterranean existence.<\/p>\n

While Rose was director of basketball at CAA, Wesley was considered the agency\u2019s consultant the past 15 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has always been connected \u2014 and a winner,\u2019\u2019 one NBA executive said.<\/p>\n

Wesley helped Rose in player acquisition and worked with CAA coaches, including Tom Thibodeau. However, sources say Wesley also likes Jason Kidd, who interviewed for the Knicks\u2019 job Thursday.<\/p>\n

In a 2007 GQ profile, author Alex French wrote: \u201cWes is such a perfect realization of the modern American dream \u2014 full of old-fashioned wheel-greasing, hustling, and social<\/a> climbing \u2014 that it feels like it was written for the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley is nothing short of a polarizing action figure. Though former Knicks Stephon Marbury and Rasheed Wallace mocked the hiring, ESPN\u2019s Jay Williams flew into hyperbole.<\/p>\n

Williams indicated Wesley\u2019s presence as a free-agent recruiter could be more essential than Rose\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to see me at Knicks game<\/a>s this year,\u2019\u2019 Williams said. \u201cWhen I tell you \u2018World Wide Wes\u2019 is the best free-agent hire in the history of the Knicks\u2019 organization, I\u2019m just going to tell you he\u2019s someone who\u2019s been around basketball. We know how this game works. He is sung about in Drake songs \u2014 the most connected individual in the history of basketball.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me tell you how \u2018World Wide Wes\u2019 works. He has so many high touch points with individuals who have influence. From a player perspective, he\u2019ll get anyone on the phone. He\u2019ll get you to buy into the big picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marbury\u2019s disdain for the Camden, N.J., product poured through a vicious video last week. The Coney Islander now coaches in China.<\/p>\n

\u201cC\u2019mon, man. Did you really just bring \u2018World Wide Sucker\u2019 to the New York Knicks,\u2019\u2019 Marbury said. \u201cReally? You brought this dude here?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a real New York Knicks fan. C\u2019mon, Dolan. You gotta be kidding me, man. What\u2019s going on? There\u2019s gotta be an explanation. Not him. Out of all people, you bring this dude here? You bring him to NYC? To New York? He ain\u2019t got no credibility here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, Wesley\u2019s got his enemies. Wallace called the move \u201ca brain fart.\u201d Wallace finds a Rose-Wesley tandem dangerous because \u201cDolan\u2019s taking on their baggage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wallace pointed out other agents could have pause about sending their clients to the CAA Knicks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever they had beef with or problems with now is going to come up and affect them,\u2019\u2019 Wallace told CBS Sports Radio. \u201cNow that they got those executive positions with the Knicks, they might not get these certain players.\u201d<\/p>\n

But can it get any worse? The Knicks have laid an egg in free agency for years \u2014 the Kevin Durant-Kyrie Irving-DeAndre Jordan gambit to Brooklyn serving as Dolan\u2019s final straw.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe adds the relationships he\u2019s built over the years,\u2019\u2019 said NBA insider Rashad Phillips, owner of SportsTalk 2319 mock draft. \u201cThe NBA has become a relationship business more than ever. Wes epitomizes the relationship aspect. He\u2019ll do well in New York.\u2019\u2019\n <\/p><\/div>\n
