Veteran Alabama meteorologist James Spann was on the air covering Thursday\u2019s deadly spate of tornados when he learned his own home had been struck by a twister \u2014 yet he kept right on broadcasting.<\/p>\n

Spann \u2014 who works for the ABC affiliate in Birmingham \u2014 did take a short break from the camera to check that his wife was OK, his admiring colleagues recalled on Friday<\/a> to Al.com<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019m doing is texting my wife to be sure she\u2019s in the shelter,\u201d Spann told one co-worker during his brief hiatus on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Knowing what he knows, Spann had insisted a few years back that his new home have a storm shelter built specifically to withstand a tornado, ABC noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Back on the air, Spann made sure to apologize to his listeners for stepping away.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I had to step out,\u201d he explained, \u201cwe had major damage at my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u2018My wife is OK, but the tornado came right through there and it\u2019s not good. It\u2019s bad. It\u2019s bad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Then he got right back to reporting on the twisters whirling on a northeast path through the state, interrupting only briefly to update worried fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll shoot straight with you guys,\u201d he told viewers at one point, sharing a photo of his wrecked backyard. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a rough day. Very rough day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately, his house remained \u201cintact,\u201d he told viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife got the warning, she had a plan, she was in the shelter and she\u2019s fine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously our landscaping is going to be a lot different now. We lost a lot of trees,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had obviously some shingle damage, but the house is intact, it\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans flocked to Twitter to call him a hero<\/a>, and colleagues to call him an inspiration<\/a>, but Spann just wanted folks to think instead of those who actually lost their homes.<\/p>\n

Some, he tweeted Thursday<\/a>, \u201care homeless tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
