“#USA Today ‘race and inclusion’ editor fired for Boulder shooting tweet<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A \u201crace and inclusion\u201d editor at USA Today complained on Friday that she was fired after mistakenly tweeting that the Boulder supermarket shooter was another \u201cangry white man\u201d \u2014 but she\u2019s blaming the resulting \u201calt-right\u201d outrage, not just herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always an angry white man. always,\u201d ex-editor Hemal Jhaveri had said Monday in her offending tweet \u2014 which she admitted in a Medium post on Friday<\/a> had been \u201ccareless.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExtremely tired of people\u2019s lives depending on whether a white man with an AR-15 is having a good day or not,\u201d said the tweet, which noted that just days earlier a white gunman had shot up three Atlanta area massage parlors.<\/p>\n

The tweet turned out to be inaccurate \u2014 police soon identified the Boulder suspect as Syria-born Colorado resident Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa \u2014 and Jhaveri soon apologized and deleted her tweet. <\/p>\n

But not before the tweet sparked an online onslaught of accusations that she was a race and inclusion editor who is actually a \u201cracist\u201d hater of white men.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a dashed off over-general<\/a>ization, tweeted after pictures of the shooter being taken into custody surfaced online,\u201d Jhavari said in Medium of the tweet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a careless error of judgement,\u201d she added, \u201csent at a heated time, that doesn\u2019t represent my commitment to racial equality. I regret sending it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the cat was out of the bag. Or as Jhaveri put it in Medium, she had invoked \u201cthe ire and anger of alt-right Twitter<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere was social media outrage, threats and harassment towards me,\u201d Jhaveri complained.<\/p>\n

Jhaveri was fired from her position of \u201cSports Media Group Race and Inclusion Editor;\u201d she also edited the subsection \u201cFor The Win.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not about bias,\u201d she claimed on Medium, \u201cor keeping personal opinions off of Twitter. It\u2019s about challenging whiteness and being punished for it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Of USA Today, she said, \u201cSending one wrong tweet that ended up in the hands of Sean Hannity on Fox News<\/a> though, was enough for this publication to turn tail.\u201d<\/p>\n

She ended the piece, \u201cLike many places, USA TODAY values \u201cequality and inclusion,\u201d but only as long as it knows its rightful place, which is subservient to white authority.<\/p><\/div>\n
