“Giants great Michael Strahan shares thoughts on George Floyd\u2019s death<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Former Giants great Michael Strahan and Fox Sports football analyst took to social media<\/a> and gave his thoughts on the death of George Floyd and where we are as a country when it comes to race relations.<\/p>\n

Strahan said he was upset about the deaths of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and frustrated that the country has to once again have the same conversation over the issue of police brutality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t get it. I don\u2019t understand it,\u201d Strahan said in the video. \u201cMad as hell about it. Because we continue to have these same conversations, and at the end of the day, there seems to be no resolution. No justice. No finish. I think that\u2019s the frustrating thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very hard as a black man that the color of your skin makes people scared of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strahan \u2014 a Hall of Fame defensive end who won two Super Bowls with the Giants \u2014 said many cops do good work, but that these incidents taint the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear it all the time, \u2018not every cop is a bad cop\u2019 \u2018not every black person is a bad person.\u2019 Plain and simple,\u201d said Strahan, who is a co-host of \u201cGood Morning America\u201d and one of the hosts of the \u201cStrahan, Sara & Keke\u201d show. \u201cI have a lot of cops who are my friends. I have cops who work for me. They\u2019re incredible people \u2026 They\u2019re amazing people, but there are always, always in everything, these situations especially, people who make one entire profession, one group of people look bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strahan said being a famous black person helps \u201cin some ways,\u201d but added that there have been numerous times throughout his life that he got pulled over while he was just driving. <\/p>\n

\u201c(A) week and a half ago, I\u2019m in the car driving, nice car, just driving,\u201d he said. \u201cI get pulled over, a cop pulls over for nothing. I\u2019m not speeding. I\u2019m in traffic. I\u2019m nothing, just doing nothing but driving while black.<\/p>\n

\u201cComes up to my window. Looks in and goes, \u2018Oh, Michael I\u2019m such a big fan. When I was a kid, I would go trick-or-treating just to come by your house hoping to meet you.\u2019 And what a way to meet me, by pulling me over for doing nothing. <\/p>\n

Strahan said those little \u201cagitating\u201d things have happ<\/a>ened to him \u201cmany, many\u201d times over the years, but that it\u2019s worse for black people who aren\u2019t well known.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine if you\u2019re not famous. Imagine if it happened to you all the time,\u201d he said. \u201cImagine if you\u2019re getting pushed around and disrespected and talked to in a way that makes you feel sub-human. And to see George Floyd die the way he died. Such a callous attitude towards his life. Disdain for the public whose begging you to let that man breathe. It angers me, angers me. <\/p>\n

Strahan said these protests are an important part of the civic discussion, but that they must be peaceful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get the protests. I understand the protests,\u201d he said. \u201cI do not agree with the looting and the rioting because that\u2019s taking advantage of a situation and dishonoring George Floyd and all the others who we know of who have died senselessly at the hands of the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strahan also said his son was involved in a situation where the police did not treat him with respect.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son was put in the back of a cop car,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd they walked the person by to look in the back to see is that him or not because he looked like someone they said was Dominican who had robbed someone. It shouldn\u2019t happen. It shouldn\u2019t happen, people.<\/p>\n

Am I pissed? Absolutely. But as a black man, if I show too much anger, then you\u2019re scared of me. It shouldn\u2019t be the case. It shouldn\u2019t be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Floyd, 46, died on May 25 in Minneapolis after police officer Derek Chauvin, 44, pressed his knee into Floyd\u2019s neck for more than eight minutes after Floyd was suspected of spending a counterfeit $20 bill.<\/p>\n

The charges against Chauvin were upgraded on Wednesday. He now faces the more serious charge of second-degree murder, in addition to the original charges of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter with culpable negligence.<\/p>\n

The other officers on the scene Thomas Lane, 37, J. Alexander Kueng, 26, and Tou Thao, 34, are now being charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.<\/p>\n

Though Strahan said it isn\u2019t easy, he\u2019s holding onto hope for a better future, especially for his children.<\/p>\n

\u201c(I) hope my kids can grow up and be in a place where we\u2019re better than we\u2019re in right now,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the only thing we can hope for. And if it doesn\u2019t change now, I don\u2019t know what it\u2019s going to take to change it.<\/p>\n

Strahan said the country can\u2019t rely on politicians or \u201csome grand speech\u201d to solve the problem, and that it\u2019s up to \u201cpeople to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to stop depending, I feel, on others to change for us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe gotta get together and we gotta make a change for ourselves. In a positive way, in a peaceful way, if possible.\u201d <\/p>\n

Strahan said it\u2019s important for people to keep having these conversations and to continue to treat each other with respect, adding again that these incidents have made him \u201cangry, upset, sad, scared.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully there is some change coming,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
