“#White House downplays migrant surge as normal springtime rise<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A top White House aide on Sunday insisted the rising numbers of migrants, particularly unaccompanied children, crossing the border is just the normal springtime surge.<\/p>\n

Challenged to respond to the growing numbers of children arriving on their own \u2014 with 18,000 now in federal custody \u2014 Kate Bedingfield, the White House communications director, said the situation was not unusual. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the same kinds of surges that we\u2019ve seen,\u201d Bedingfield said during a Sunday morning app<\/a>earance on on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese surges are cyclical, they\u2019re not the result of one administration\u2019s policies or another administration\u2019s policies.\u201d <\/p>\n

Bedingfield said the surge reflects \u201cpeople fleeing poverty and violence\u201d and pointed to similar surges in 2014, under President Obama, and 2019, under President Trump.<\/p>\n

Bedingfield\u2019s comments came as a new poll found that showed that immigration is an area where President Biden has his lowest approval ratings. It found that 57 percent of Americans disapprove of his approach on immigration, and 54 percent believe the situation has reached \u201ccrisis\u201d level.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Bedingfield claimed that immigration policies are in many ways unchanged under Biden. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to be clear our policy hasn\u2019t changed,\u201d she said, citing health codes and other laws that require or allow the government to prevent entry into the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of people who arrive at our border, we\u2019re turning away.\u201d <\/p>\n

The longterm solution, she added, is not building new facilities but working with countries in the \u201cNorthern Triangle\u201d \u2014 Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras \u2014 to improve the situation there so migrants don\u2019t want to come to the U.S.<\/p>\n

Bedingfield added that the Biden administration is opening new shelters that will be able to shift children out of the hands of Customs and Border Patrol and into facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
