The organization wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> that he had passed away Saturday morning (March 28) following a long illness.<\/p>\n<p>Cecil was the co-designer of the Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO), a massive analog synthesizer that brought new sounds to popular music. He began the project with Robert Margouleff, taking over ownership of TONTO in 1975 and maintaining it for nearly four more decades. The success of Cecil\u2019s and Margouleff\u2019s work with TONTO opened up possibilities for synthesizers in the pop world and beyond.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-jSgupP eVYAHa consumer-marketing-unit consumer-marketing-unit--article-mid-content\" role=\"presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit__slot consumer-marketing-unit__slot--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"journey-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Growing up in England, Cecil studied <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> and engineering in school while also becoming a proficient bass player, picking up work as a young man with the BBC Orchestra. He developed an interest in electronics from an early age, learning circuitry during his time in the Royal Air Force. After his discharge, a stint in South Africa, and time on the West Coast of the United States, Cecil later relocated to New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-cVkrFx hzPuOC\"><\/div>\n<p>During his time as the chief technical engineer at the famed Mediasound Studios, he first encountered Margouleff and Moog synthesizers. In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.musicworks.ca\/featured-article\/malcolm-cecil-and-history-tonto\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.musicworks.ca\/featured-article\/malcolm-cecil-and-history-tonto\">a 2017 interview<\/a>, he recalled, \u201cI had never seen a Moog before. I looked at it for a few nights, saw an oscillator voltage control, and thought. \u2018I know what that is.\u2019 Voltage control filter .\u00a0.\u00a0. I know that too. Envelope generator .\u00a0.\u00a0. this thing sends mail?\u201d The two men began working together on material, releasing their first album <em>Zero Time<\/em> as TONTO\u2019s Expanding Head Band in 1971.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--in-content\">\n<div class=\"ad__slot ad__slot--in-content\" data-node-id=\"84n6e\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Not long after the album\u2019s release, a 21-year-old Stevie Wonder showed up at Cecil\u2019s apartment with a copy of <em>Zero Time<\/em> and an interest in working together. From there, Cecil and Margouleff helped Wonder develop his string of revered records in the 1970s: <em>Music of My Mind<\/em>, <em>Talking Book<\/em>, <em>Innervisions<\/em>, and <em>Fulfillingness\u2019 First Finale.<\/em> Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson used TONTO (and Cecil\u2019s production) for their collaborative album <em>1980<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing with the machine on the album\u2019s cover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cecil and TONTO shaped a number of projects throughout the 1970s and 1980s, appearing on releases by the Isley Brothers, Billy Preston, Quincy Jones, Minnie Riperton, Randy Newman, the Doobie Brothers, James Taylor, and more. He returned to work with Stevie Wonder on 1991\u2019s <em>Jungle Fever<\/em>.
