They had harsh words on Hershel\u2019s (Scott Wilson) farm in Season 2, when Daryl told her she wasn\u2019t his problem. Daryl was displeased to find her loading up a car to leave the group in early Season 5, and he called her out on it in \u201cConsumed.\u201d And, more recently, Carol\u2019s recklessness in pursuit of justice for her son\u2019s death has driven a wedge between the two.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s in that uncomfortable state we find Daryl and Carol in \u201cDiverged.\u201d Post-argument, neither party is really sure where he or she stands with the other person (Daryl tries to give an apology, which Carol won\u2019t hear because, as she later tells Dog, \u201che meant what he said.\u201d). They each go their own way, and the distance weighs heavily on them both \u2014 but especially on Carol, who can\u2019t seem to get Daryl\u2019s words out of her head.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Soup_With_a_Side_of_Sadness\"><\/span>Soup With a Side of Sadness<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Carol\u2019s story this episode largely revolves around soup \u2014 no, really. After saying an awkward goodbye to Daryl, she and Dog head back to Alexandria. There she finds Jerry (Cooper Andrews) and asks him for something, anything, to do. Eventually she finds a purpose in attempting to make some soup and kill a rat living in the walls of her house.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_992490\" style=\"width: 865px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-992490\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-992490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1-855x570.jpg\" alt=\"walking dead season 10 episode 21 diverged carol melissa mcbride\" width=\"855\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1-855x570.jpg 855w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1-434x289.jpg 434w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1-234x155.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1-570x380.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/walking-dead-seaon-10-episode-22-carol-1.jpg 2028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-992490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eli Ade\/AMC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Neither of those endeavors are particularly successful; and it\u2019s through her increasingly erratic reactions to those failures we see the thematic meat of Carol\u2019s tale in \u201cDiverged.\u201d Daryl\u2019s words have gotten to her. Badly. She muses to Dog about whether she should \u201cget out of everyone\u2019s hair\u201d and leave again, as Daryl suggested (although she admits that she misses him). She mows down a field full of walkers by herself, which, while probably qualifying as some kind of public service in the zombie apocalypse, serves as further evidence of her shattered psyche. Oh, and she literally tears a wall down in pursuit of that rat.<\/p>\n<p>Later, when kindhearted Jerry comes to check on her, the truth comes out: She thinks she\u2019s broken after everything she\u2019s been through and everything she\u2019s done, and Daryl came to that conclusion \u201ca whole lot later than everyone else.\u201d Jerry comforts her by hugging her as she cries, and the rat finally runs out of the house. He\u2019s having issues with his motorcycle that require him to scavenge for parts from a few old cars, and he winds up in a pit with a walker (because like death and taxes and Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, walker pits on <em>The Walking Dead<\/em> are just a fact of life). He survives (duh) and he fixes his motorcycle (duh), and he even manages to scavenge some dried food from walkers that look like they could\u2019ve been members of the mysterious Reapers.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Daryl rides home to Alexandria and sees Carol, and both look worse for the wear. She offers him soup. He says he\u2019s not hungry. No apologies are said, but it\u2019s clear they\u2019re not done with each other \u2014 they both say they\u2019re going to get some rest and both turn away, but Carol waits to hear Daryl close the gate, and Daryl waits to hear her close the garage, before they go their separate ways. Gosh, just talk it out, you two!<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Observations\"><\/span>Other Observations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>I enjoyed that this episode explored Carol\u2019s frame of mind without using hallucinations or flashbacks. We all know she\u2019s not OK, but we don\u2019t need a \u201cLook at the Flowers\u201d-style version of Alpha (Samantha Morton) or a ghostly Sam (Matthew Lintz) to show up and tell us that. Having Carol break down like this, with no fanfare, felt more authentic than some of the ways we\u2019ve seen her shatter in the past.<\/li>\n<li>Was Daryl\u2019s book about pirates a nod to the spinoff? Are he and Carol going to head off on a boat, rather than his motorcycle, at the end of Season 11?<\/li>\n<li>That song at the end of the episode was really great, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it was. Googling the lyrics was of no use, unless I misheard them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rating: 2\/5.<\/strong> One star for the music, one star for Carol\u2019s heartbreaking breakdown \u2014 but this was easily the slowest out of the <em>TWD<\/em> bonus episodes so far.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>The Walking Dead<\/em>, Sundays, 9\/8c, AMC<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"show-box\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"key-art\" alt=\"The Walking Dead Key Art\" src=\"https:\/\/ntvb.tmsimg.com\/assets\/p8282918_b_h13_bb.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
