Conservative: Dems Target Red States<\/strong><\/p>\n

Democrats are alarmed by the number of residents fleeing blue states, but \u201cinstead of trying to fix the policies\u201d that push people away, liberal lawmakers \u201cwant to impose those unpopular mandates nationwide,\u201d observes Liz Peek at The Hill<\/a>. To \u201celiminate the competition between states that they are losing,\u201d lefties are \u201cpushing bills that would put the federal government in charge of states\u2019 labor laws, fiscal policies and voting rules\u201d \u2014 from stimulus funds that prohibit state-level tax cuts\u00a0to ballot-box \u201creforms\u201d intended to enhance blue turnout in red places.\u00a0These \u201cegregious power-grabs\u201d are \u201cdownright authoritarian.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Private-Sector Censors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s congressional tech hearings saw Democrats trying to get around the First Amendment, recruiting Facebook<\/a> and Twitter to \u201cabridge the freedom of speech,\u201d warn the editors at the Washington Examiner<\/a>. Democrats made it clear that they \u201chave the power to subsidize, tax, regulate and protect the giants, so they expect these companies to crack down on bad speech\u201d \u2014 or in other words, \u201cto censor the other side.\u201d They label as \u201cmisinformation and hate speech\u201d any facts and opinions against the left, including \u201cpro-lifers, conservative commentators and investigative reporters who have unearthed unflattering news<\/a> about President Joe Biden\u201d and his clan. Knowing they can\u2019t outright ban pro-life opinion or stories like The Post\u2019s\u00a0Hunter Files, Democrats seek instead to \u201climit the public square to a handful of companies and then pressure those companies to do the censoring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tech beat: Zuck Punts to Congress<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Vox, Peter Kafka sums up<\/a> Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s \u201cmessage for Washington: We\u2019re happ<\/a>y to change the way we run Facebook. Just tell us how.\u201d\u00a0That was the upshot of Zuck\u2019s testimony before Congress Thursday. Everyone in Washington \u201cwants to do .\u2009.\u2009. something about Facebook,\u201d from GOPers worried about censorship of conservative views to Democrats who think the platform might \u201cdestabilize democracy.\u201d Facebook\u2019s answer: Congress should force it and other platforms to put \u201csystems in place for identifying unlawful content and removing it.\u201d In exchange, Congress would leave in place Section 230 protections that allow Facebook to act as a publisher without a publisher\u2019s liabilities. The effort needn\u2019t be entirely successful, so long as Facebook is seen spending \u201ca lot of time and money\u201d trying.<\/p>\n

From the right: Noem\u2019s Capitulation<\/strong><\/p>\n

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem was a rising star among the GOP\u2019s Trumpian base, which adored her for resisting drastic lockdowns \u2014 \u201cthen, in one fell swoop, she messed it all up,\u201d sighs Gavin Wax at American Greatness<\/a>. She did this by opposing \u201ca measure pushed by South Dakota Republicans in the state legislature that would protect female sports\u201d from biological males, a move that has left Christian activists \u201cenraged at the latest betrayal of traditional values and mental sanity from a Republican leader.\u201d The governor \u201csays that the legislation to protect female athletics would undermine the \u2018great strides we have taken to gain national exposure and increase opportunities for our next generation over the past two decades\u2019\u200a\u201d \u2014 code for fear of the large corporations and pro leagues that are in complete thrall to gender ideologies. \u201cWhile liberals exploit the powers at their disposal to achieve success, Republicans parrot silly excuses made up by lobbyists to confuse their constituents and disenfranchise their grassroots supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: How China Punishes\u00a0Companies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clothing giants H&M and Nike are paying the price for speaking out against Beijing\u2019s forced-labor practices:\u00a0H&M has had \u201cits products \u00adremoved from several major e-commerce retailers,\u201d The Wall Street Journal\u2019s editorial board note<\/a>, while Chinese \u201ccelebrities cut ties with Nike, as netizens rained scorn on the brands\u201d on Chinese social media. The companies issued statements last year \u201cdecrying forced labor in the concentration camps Beijing operates to imprison Uighurs in Xinjiang\u201d \u2014 a \u00adregion known for cotton production. The Chinese Communist Party\u2019s sinister response: \u201cto use China\u2019s market power as leverage to shut down critics anywhere in the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
