“#COVID-19 escaped from Wuhan lab<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slammed China\u2019s handling of the coronavirus pandemic \u2014 admitting that he could use the word \u201ccover-up\u201d to describe the country\u2019s response to the virus, which has now killed more than 2.7 million people globally.<\/p>\n

\u201cA year after this pathogen started, we\u2019re now having a critical analysis of where it came from by scientists,\u201d Dr. Robert Redfield told CNN\u2019s Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta Sunday in a special report called \u201cCOVID WAR: The Pandemic Doctors Speak Out.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems to me that some of the information is people are not being transparent about it. I could use the word \u2018cover-up,\u2019 but I don\u2019t know that so I\u2019m not going to speculate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former CDC chief also said he offered to send CDC workers to the country to assist with the outbreak of the deadly bug in January 2020, but the offer was never accepted.<\/p>\n

He said that then-President Trump even called President Xi Jinping, and that Alex Azar, the Health and Human Services secretary, made requests to China\u2019s minister of health, but both to no avail.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we could have learned very quickly that we\u2019re dealing with a different beast than the one that everyone had sold us,\u201d Redfield said.<\/p>\n

The respected virologist also repeated his belief that the pandemic leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China \u2014 a controversial theory he cited without evidence \u2014 but added that he didn\u2019t think it was intentional.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still think the most likely etiology of this pathogen in Wuhan was from a laboratory \u2014 you know, escaped. Other people don\u2019t believe that. That\u2019s fine,\u201d he told Gupta.<\/p>\n

\u201cScience<\/a> will eventually figure it out. It\u2019s not unusual for respiratory pathogens that are being worked on in a laboratory to infect a laboratory worker.<\/p>\n

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation\u2019s top infectious disease expert, has disputed Redfield\u2019s claims that SARS-CoV-2\u00a0was created in a Chinese lab, saying Redfield was merely expressing an \u201copinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Fauci did admit he was \u201calways\u201d skeptical about the COVID-19 data being reported out of China.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always had skepticism about it because of what we went through with SARS,\u201d he told CNN\u2019s Gupta.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina was saying, \u2018Oh it\u2019s flu, it\u2019s flu,\u2019 and then the next thing you know, SARS was all over the world \u2014 in Canada, in Australia, all over the place. They were not very transparent in the past. It wasn\u2019t outright lying. They just didn\u2019t give you all the information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a joint World Health Organization-China study on the origins of the disease says that transmission of the bug from bats to humans through another animal is the most likely scenario and that a lab leak is \u201cextremely unlikely,\u201d according to a draft copy obtained by The Associated Press.<\/p>\n

The report\u2019s release has been delayed repeatedly, raising questions about whether Beijing was trying to skew the conclusions to prevent blame for the pandemic falling on China.<\/p>\n

But the AP received a copy Monday from a Geneva-based diplomat from a WHO-member country. <\/p>\n

It was unclear, however, whether the report might still be changed prior to the official release, though the diplomat said it was the final version.<\/p>\n

Another diplomat confirmed also getting the report. Both refused to be identified because they were not authorized to release it ahead of publication.<\/p>\n

The researchers listed four scenarios in order of likelihood for the emergence of the deadly virus.<\/p>\n

Topping the list was transmission from bats through another animal, which they said was likely to very likely. They evaluated direct spread from bats to humans as likely, and said that spread through \u201ccold-chain\u201d food products was possible but not likely.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
