“#’Chicago P.D.’ Stars Talk Complicated Team Relationships, Plus More Upstead Is Coming<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve been wondering if you maybe just dreamed partners Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer<\/a>) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos<\/a>) taking that big step and becoming romantically involved earlier in Chicago P.D.<\/em><\/a> Season 8, don\u2019t worry: You didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Just because we haven\u2019t had \u201cUpstead\u201d moments onscreen doesn\u2019t mean that the NBC procedural has forgotten about their relationship. \u201cWe have a big cast \u2014 there\u2019s nine regulars \u2014 and a lot of storylines, and it\u2019s tough in 42-43 minutes to service everybody,\u201d Soffer recently told reporters. \u201c[If] you\u2019re not seeing a certain dynamic play out in one episode, it\u2019s because we have a lot of story we have to cover and I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll see it in the next episode.\u201d<\/p>\n

Considering how many inter-team romances there have been over the course of the series<\/a> (so far), it\u2019s no surprise that Sergeant Hank Voight seems to now have \u201ca \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u2019 attitude,\u201d Jason Beghe<\/a> said of his character.<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t expect Voight to be part of the next CPD romance, say, with the new Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller (Nicole Ari Parker<\/a>). Their dynamic is \u201cprobably not [one of a] traditional romance,\u201d according to Beghe, though he did acknowledge, \u201cone never knows where Cupid\u2019s arrow could land.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather, between the two, \u201cthere\u2019s a deep respect and a need because we need each other to survive,\u201d he continued. \u201cThere\u2019s a connection there and there\u2019s a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of complicated relationships and mutual respect, we\u2019ve seen Halstead push back against his boss in the past. \u201cYou will see more of it, but maybe not in the way it played out in previous seasons,\u201d Soffer previewed. \u201cTheir relationship\u2019s really grown. Halstead app<\/a>reciates what kind of cop Voight is, and Voight appreciates what kind of cop Jay is. They might not see eye-to-eye and Jay might push back at times, but it doesn\u2019t mean he doesn\u2019t totally believe in Voight and trust Voight.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s changed is that now Halstead is \u201clooking out for Voight\u2019s best interests,\u201d Soffer said. \u201cHe wants Voight to succeed and in the new world \u2014 with progress and everything that\u2019s going on in current events \u2014 Voight might need to be a different kind of cop to do that, from Jay\u2019s perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Voight wants from his detective. \u201cVoight loves and respects Halstead as he is,\u201d Beghe adds. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason why he has a team. He doesn\u2019t want a team of eight Voights. He needs Halstead to be Halstead. His mantra is \u2018the best thing you can be is you.\u2019 But Voight is who he is. So he does that and he stands up for it, but it doesn\u2019t mean he doesn\u2019t appreciate people disagreeing.\u201d<\/p>\n
