Is anyone here in charge?<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden last week tasked Vice President Kamala Harris with leading the White House response to the near-record surge of migrants crossing the southern border. Yet her schedule doesn\u2019t have a single immigration-related meeting.<\/p>\n

Why doesn\u2019t Harris seem to be doing anything to solve what she now calls \u201ca huge problem\u201d? White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday \u201cclarified\u201d that the veep is only in charge of diplomacy to address the problem\u2019s \u201croot causes.\u201d <\/p>\n

Huh? Did it really take nearly a week to set the record straight, or did the president change his mind?<\/p>\n

Maybe Harris decided she didn\u2019t want the job. After all, leaked administration documents show that frontline agencies expect the number of unaccompanied children crossing to soon double (again) to far above record levels.<\/p>\n

The feds already have an all-time high of more than 18,000 unaccompanied minors in custody, with about 5,500 held in temporary facilities not meant to house kids at all. They\u2019re being held an average of 90 hours \u2014\u00a0though the legal limit is 72 \u2014\u00a0because there\u2019s simply no room for them elsewhere.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s going to get much worse. Per documents leaked to The Wall Street Journal and Axios, the administration estimates the number of unaccompanied minors crossing could rise from 16,000 this month to 26,000 in September. That would be double the previous record of 11,475 in May 2019. <\/p>\n

Even the low-end estimates suggest we\u2019ll see double the number of children crossing this year than in 2019, thought of as a \u201ccrisis\u201d year. And these projections don\u2019t include native Mexican kids. <\/p>\n

All told, by September, the feds could have more than 53,000 kids in custody. They can\u2019t handle the number they already have, so Team Biden \u201cis planning to begin next week releasing children before sponsors\u2019 background checks have been completed,\u201d the Journal reports<\/a>. <\/p>\n

And, as The Post reported, the administration is forgoing FBI fingerprint checks to vet those caring for children in custody, instead using public-records checks that the Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 own inspector general<\/a> warned would be less effective at discovering past sexual or criminal offenses.<\/p>\n

Bottom line: Biden & Co.\u2019s only real priority is to do absolutely nothing to secure the border. After that, they\u2019ve got nothing but confusion \u2014 including over who\u2019s in charge of the crisis . . . if anyone is.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
