It began in 1933 in Georgia as the brainchild of Dr. Charles B. Almond\u2019s wife, Eudora Brown Almond, who chose the date because on that day in 1842, the first anesthetic for surgery was used. Red carnations are the symbolic flower of choice, but anything that shows your gratitude is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate \u2014 even just a big \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctors here are just a few of New York\u2019s finest health-care stars, a unique breed of professionals who have proven, especially during the extraordinary challenges of the past year, how dedicated and committed they are to helping the community.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leading_by_example\"><\/span><strong>Leading by example<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Yves Duroseau, head of emergency medicine at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lenoxhill.northwell.edu\/\">Lenox Hill Hospital<\/a>, has a history of taking the lead.<\/p>\n<p>Born to Haitian immigrant parents, the 49-year-old said he was \u201cbrainwashed\u201d to become a doctor, because \u201cthey wanted us to do better and find opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his current post for eight years, overseeing upward of 200 staffers, in the past year he has faced the challenges of COVID-19 with unprecedented demands as head of his department.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-nypost-inline-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Dr. Yves Duroseau \" class=\"wp-image-17699429 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-36.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-36.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-36.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-36.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=600 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><figcaption>Dr. Yves Duroseau <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Northwell Health<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cExercising is important, meditating. Things that give you outlets. I became more in tune with my Peloton and went for runs in Central Park. I had to find other ways to keep calm and focused,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He needed to stay strong, since \u201cfear doesn\u2019t translate very well for the rest of the department,\u201d he said, finding ways to keep emotions in check. <\/p>\n<p>Last December, Duroseau was asked to become the first doctor in America to get a COVID-19 vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, absolutely. Yes! I wanted to set the example that it was safe to do it. Bea attended <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msm.edu\/\">Morehouse School of Medicine<\/a>, a historically black college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal was to learn and embed myself in serving the underserved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While training in breast clinics, Bea noted how minority women came in with advanced tumors at an alarmingly disproportionate rate. \u201cI thought, why do the inequalities exist?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-nypost-inline-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Bea\" class=\"wp-image-17699467 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-37.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-37.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-37.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-37.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=600 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><figcaption>Dr. Bea.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">NY Presbyterian<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>After \u201cfalling in love with surgery,\u201d Bea decided to specialize in breast surgery, and later joined NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist a year and a half ago, attracted by its diversity and ability to address disparities head-on. <\/p>\n<p>Sadly, COVID-19 also impacted her work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen weren\u2019t getting their mammograms \u2014 they were put on hold based on recommendations from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acr.org\/\">American College of Radiology<\/a>,\u201d said Bea. Having been awarded a multi-institutional grant to increase mammography screening for black women, \u201cWe decided we had potential to pivot,\u201d she said. To this end, Bea conducted focus groups to learn about the barriers deterring women from pre-cancer screenings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe partnered with black churches within the community, training women [to be] lay navigators to provide breast cancer awareness education,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s my mission to advocate and use my voice as a young black woman to bring to light what is going on, so people can take care of their own health. It\u2019s very rewarding. It\u2019s what I\u2019m supposed to do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The nature of her work helped her remain focused throughout the pandemic. Last year, she was \u201cknee deep in blood,\u201d in the operating room saving a patient with a gunshot wound. A week following, she learned the patient had been COVID-19 positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrauma doesn\u2019t stop for COVID-19,\u201d she said. \u201cWe had to keep taking care of injured patients who may or may not have had the virus. There wasn\u2019t time to test and it didn\u2019t matter. Trauma is so im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te. You don\u2019t get to wait to find out. A 33-year-old critical care medicine fellow at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/\">Mount Sinai Hospital<\/a>, she found herself needing a heart transplant. <\/p>\n<p>Luckily, she was the recipient of a new heart within weeks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-nypost-inline-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Gragossian\" class=\"wp-image-17699458 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-33.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-33.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-33.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/doctors-33.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=600 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><figcaption>Gragossian<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">The Mount Sinai Health System<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019d had to wait longer, I would have died,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it made me want to do everything more. When you\u2019re laying there in your deathbed at a young age, it makes you rethink everything in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Compounding her challenging journey, Gragossian was diagnosed with avascular necrosis in her hip due to lack of blood supply, a complication from the transplant medication. Hip replacement surgery was necessary, but, with the help of family and supervisors at Mount Sinai, Graggossian has recovered and, amazingly, she\u2019s returning to work next week.<\/p>\n<p>For her, inner strength is guiding her recovery. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t realize how strong you are until something\u2019s thrown at you,\u201d she said.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
