Safe to assume, the pair <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ed all that way for a laugh; then they turned the delight of their discovery into a documentary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>reciative to a fault, \u201cAlien on Stage\u201d never really makes clear whether its subjects \u2014 a troupe who call themselves the Paranoid Dramatics \u2014 are in on the joke. The filmmakers have nothing but affection for director Dave Mitchell and his company, and yet it feels as if t<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">hey\u2019re fans not of the show but of their own kooky taste for liking it<\/span>. There\u2019s a hipster \u201cwe saw it first\u201d vibe to the project, to the extent that Harvey and Kummer credit themselves with helping arrange for the show to do a one-night-only performance at the Leicester Square Theatre, a small independent stage in London\u2019s West End that hosts magic shows and standup co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>ns most nights.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s roughly the point at which they begin filming, as the Paranoid team prepare for this high-pressure encore. If it were all done in jest (and that\u2019s possible, considering that their past productions have involved silly songs and actors in drag, \u00e0 la Monty Python), the show might qualify as parody, but as presented, Mitchell seems to be undertaking an earnest adaptation minus the wee little step of clearing the rights. Evidently, his goal is to re-create the tension and terror of the 1979 movie on a proscenium, which is no small task when you consider the role quick cuts, trick angles and special effects played in the film version \u2014 to say nothing of a pro cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlien\u201d was famously conceived with a male actor in the Sigourney Weaver role, and Mitchell continues the gender-flipping tradition, not with Ripley (he casts his wife, Lydia Hayward, there) but by replacing Ian Holm\u2019s Ash with a woman, Jacqui Roe. The actors don\u2019t really resemble their on-screen counterparts, but that\u2019s part of the fun in a film that plays like a cross between \u201cThe Fully Monty\u201d and \u201cWaiting for Guffman,\u201d minus the all-important question of why they\u2019re doing it. None of the cast seems particularly keen on acting, and the idea of doing a London \u201ctransfer\u201d may well have been the filmmakers\u2019, but it\u2019s still amusing to see them swept along by the attention their little show is generating.<\/p>\n<p>Amusing, but not outrageous, and while I\u2019m glad Kummer\u2019s camera was there to capture it, the movie doesn\u2019t reveal enough about the performers\u2019 backgrounds or personalities. Perhaps a scripted remake would (Mitchell, the play\u2019s deeply committed director, could be the rough sketch for a Ricky Gervais character). But questions remain: Why are bus drivers putting on a show? What do their peers make of the hobby? And if London audiences describe it as \u201cthe funniest thing I\u2019ve seen ever in the theater,\u201d does that qualify as success or complete failure in their minds?<\/p>\n<p>All over the world, small groups of people pay homage to their favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> in oddball ways, and filmmakers have been poking fun at the phenomenon for years \u2014 whether it\u2019s Max Fischer\u2019s high school stage version of \u201cSerpico\u201d in \u201cRushmore\u201d or the kid-made action movies of \u201cSon of Rambow\u201d and \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation.\u201d Those projects stick with us because they provide some insight into the parties responsible.<\/p>\n<p>At time, \u201cAlien on Stage\u201d seems undecided whether to admire or tease Mitchell\u2019s crew, who put <span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">considerable care into replicating certain aspects of the show, like the chest-burster and the creature. <\/span>Props guy Peter devises a remarkably accurate costume with a bike-helmet head and fully articulated tail, describing his work as \u201cwhat Ridley Scott would have wanted to do but in a more basic format\u201d \u2014 more like H.R. Giger with spray paint and popsicle sticks. Behind the scenes at least, the team takes itself seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, the more psychotronic set-pieces, such as Ash\u2019s decapitation, are impressive to see performed on stage (though a creature-p.o.v.-cam makes the monster\u2019s cameos hard to judge). The rest amounts to an awkward slog, as don\u2019t-quit-your-day-job actors woodenly recite Dan O\u2019Bannon\u2019s dialogue for a packed house of ironic-minded theatergoers, who hoot their approval. Looking back, I\u2019m not necessarily proud of ridiculing Z-grade movies with my friends, but at least their creators were spared our heckling.
