\n The Yankees entered 2020 with championship aspirations. And while that mindset remains the same during spring training 2.0, they acknowledge what lies ahead for them \u2014 and the rest of the league \u2014 is daunting.<\/p>\n

Before they can compete for a title, they have to get through camp and then a 60-game<\/a> regular season before the World Series can even be a consideration.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor myself and my family, we\u2019ll try to take it one day at a time and not have too many grand expectations,\u2019\u2019 Brett Gardner said Sunday during the team\u2019s second full day of workouts in The Bronx. \u201cWe\u2019ll all see how it plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like many other teams, the Yankees are already dealing with COVID-19 cases and they are weeks away from hitting the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re testing out the protocols,\u2019\u2019 James Paxton said. \u201cWe\u2019ll do everything we can to mitigate risk, but obviously there\u2019s still a risk. We have to see if what we\u2019re doing is gonna work to a degree where we\u2019re gonna play and keep it safe enough to travel<\/a> and play against other teams.\u201d<\/p>\n

The schedule, which is expected to be released this week, will reduce travel, as teams play against teams within their own divisions and the accompanying division in the opposing league.<\/p>\n

For now, the Yankees haven\u2019t had any players opt out of the season. But the reality throughout the league is that the reality could change at any time.<\/p>\n

\u201cNumbers are coming in and we\u2019re testing [players] every other day,\u2019\u2019 Paxton said. \u201cIf we see any spikes, we\u2019ll have to address that.\u201d<\/p>\n

And just a few days after teams have reported to their home stadiums throughout the majors, no one is able to predict what might happ<\/a>en.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe needed to get to a point where we got protocols where we felt the risk was lessened enough to where we felt safe,\u2019\u2019 Paxton said. \u201cWe\u2019ll see how things go. We\u2019ll constantly have to weigh how [well] we\u2019re doing. Everyone has their own level where they feel comfortable with it. We\u2019ll constantly have to see how we feel about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though the Yankees don\u2019t have any players who have decided not to play, manager Aaron Boone said, \u201cIf a situation does occur where they feel like they need to, we\u2019ll be supportive of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gardner said he was fully on board with playing after conversations with his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am personally 100 percent committed,\u2019\u2019 Gardner said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be here if I wasn\u2019t. \u2026 Me being here kind of speaks for itself. I\u2019ll do what I can to make this work.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for his expectations for the team, Gardner said, \u201cI think we have a great chance to do special things on the field. I think there is a lot of uncertainty with where things are right now \u2014 not myself personally, [but] just a whole lot of things have to go right for all this to work and I\u2019m optimistic, but also cautious and a little hesitant at the same time. We should enjoy everything that comes with all this and we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

If they do play, Gardner still believes the Yankees are well positioned to contend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think a whole lot has changed since left spring training, other than the fact that hopefully a couple guys who might have started the season on the injured list are healthy now,\u2019\u2019 Gardner said. \u201cFor us, I think we look better now than a few months ago, but as we saw with [Masahiro Tanaka getting drilled in the head Saturday], a lot of things can change in a hurry. I love the guys we have. I love the team we have and I feel great about our chances. We\u2019re excited to hopefully get these few weeks by us. It\u2019s been a long time coming.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
