An off-duty Minneapolis firefighter said she was \u201cdesperate\u201d to render medical assistance to George Floyd during his fatal encounter with police \u2014 and testified that ex-cop Derek Chauvin looked \u201ccomfortable\u201d while pressing his knee on Floyd\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n

Genevieve Hansen, an EMT, said Tuesday at Chauvin\u2019s murder trial in Floyd\u2019s death that she pleaded with cops but grew increasingly upset when they refused.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was concerned to see a handcuffed man who was not moving with officers, with their whole body weight on his back, and a crowd that was stressed out,\u201d Hansen, 27, testified.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was not moving,\u201d she said. \u201cHis face was, the first thing that concerned me is his face was like smooshed into the ground,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI thought his face looked puffy and swollen, which would happ<\/a>en if you were putting a grown man\u2019s weight on someone\u2019s neck.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI identified myself right away because I noticed that he needed medical attention,\u201d she said. \u201cMy attention moved from Mr. Floyd, to \u2018how can I gain access to this patient and give him medical attention or direct the officers?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Hansen said she attempted to get to Floyd but was held back by former Minneapolis officer Tou Thao \u2014 one of three other ex-cops due to stand trial in the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said something along the lines of, \u2018if you really are a Minneapolis firefighter you would know better than to get involved,’\u201d she said Thao told her. <\/p>\n

Hansen also said that Chauvin \u201cseemed very comfortable with the majority of his weight balanced on top of Mr. Floyd\u2019s neck.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn memory he had his hand in his pocket,\u201d she said. \u201cHe looked so comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chauvin, 45, is on trial on second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter charges, and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n

Defense attorney Eric Nelson noted inconsistencies in Hansen\u2019s earlier statements to investigators and noted that she was unaware at the time that 911 had been called.<\/p>\n

The EMT later sparred with Nelson on cross-examination \u2014 to the point that Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill cautioned her to stick to answering -questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would agree that your own demeanor got louder and more frustrated and upset?\u201d Nelson asked her about Hansen\u2019s actions at the scene. <\/p>\n

\u201cMore desperate,\u201d Hansen answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou called the officers a bitch, right?\u201d Nelson asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got quite angry after Mr. Floyd was loaded into the ambulance.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
