“#How to Fix \u201cStart, Taskbar, and Action Center\u201d Accent Color Grayed out on Windows 10”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beginning with the October 2020 update, Windows 10 defaults to a light theme<\/a> that prevents you from setting an accent color for your Start menu, taskbar, and action center. You may see the option grayed out in Settings. Here\u2019s how to get the option back.<\/p>\n

By default, you can\u2019t set accent colors on the Start menu and taskbar in Windows 10 unless you have your appearance set to dark mode. If you\u2019re in light mode and you visit \u201cColors\u201d in Settings, you\u2019ll see the \u201cStart, taskbar, and action center\u201d grayed out.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

To fix it, we\u2019ll need to change to dark mode first. Launch Settings by clicking your Start menu and selecting the small gear icon. You can press Windows+i on your keyboard to open the Settings window.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

In Settings, click \u201cPersonalization.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

In \u201cPersonalization,\u201d click \u201cColors\u201d in the sidebar.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

In \u201cColors\u201d settings, click the \u201cChoose your color\u201d drop-down menu and select \u201cCustom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

When you select \u201cCustom\u201d from the \u201cChoose your color\u201d menu, two new options will appear below. Under \u201cChoose your default Windows mode,\u201d click the radio button beside \u201cDark.\u201d This will allow you to set an accent color for your Start menu and taskbar.<\/p>\n

(Since you chose \u201cCustom\u201d earlier, you can set \u201cChoose your default app mode\u201d to either \u201cLight\u201d or \u201cDark\u201d depending on your personal preference.)<\/p>\n

\"Under<\/p>\n

After that, scroll down the page until you see \u201cShow accent color on the following surfaces.\u201d Since you\u2019re in dark mode, the \u201cStart, taskbar, and action center\u201d option will no longer be grayed out. If you\u2019d like to use it, place a checkmark in the box beside it.<\/p>\n

\"Place<\/p>\n

Once that\u2019s set, scroll back up on the \u201cColors\u201d page, and you can pick any color you\u2019d like for your accent. You can even place a check beside \u201cAutomatically pick an accent color from my background\u201d and have the accent color match your desktop wallpaper.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/p>\n

After that, close Settings. To test out your new color, open your Start menu, and it will match the accent color you selected.<\/p>\n

If you ever want to change colors again, just revisit Settings > Personalization > Colors and pick a different accent color from the grid. Or you can uncheck the \u201cStart, taskbar, and action center\u201d option to return to default colors. Have fun!<\/p>\n
