Amazon sought out warehouse staffers with a \u201cgreat sense of humor\u201d to build a squad of Twitter warriors to knock down criticism of its fulfillment centers, a leaked document reveals.<\/p>\n

Amazon started recruiting rank-and-file workers for its social-media army in 2018 through an initiative that was known by the codename \u201cVeritas,\u201d the Latin word for truth, according to the document obtained by The Intercept.<\/a><\/p>\n

The e-commerce colossus gave these fulfillment center \u201cAmbassadors\u201d a mandate to \u201cvigilantly refute untruths\u201d about what it\u2019s like to work inside its warehouses, where Amazon has been accused of running workers ragged, the 10-page memo shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The document outlines the criteria Amazon used to select model warehouse staffers for what was then a pilot program. The candidates needed a clean HR record, a strong performance background, \u201ca great sense of humor\u201d and an enthusiasm for \u201crebutting our critics in a polite, blunt way,\u201d according to the memo.<\/p>\n

Amazon thought the ideal ambassador would have three to four years of experience in a warehouse, but the memo noted that newer employees with just a year under their belts \u201ccan be very passionate and effective.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese associates will speak in the first person about their own experiences working in
Amazon [fulfillment centers] and set the record straight \u2014 leaving no lie unchallenged and showing that people who actually know what it\u2019s like to work in our FCs love their jobs,\u201d the document says.<\/p>\n

While Amazon wanted the workers to speak for themselves, the memo shows company officials wanted a standardized format for their Twitter handles and usernames. They mulled adding an emoji to the username to \u201cgive personality, for example a small box emoji,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n

The document includes early examples of how the ambassadors would respond to online criticism from Amazon customers, journalists, lawmakers and other \u201cinfluencers.\u201d<\/p>\n

For instance, staffers at Amazon\u2019s Kent, Washington warehouse who were being trained for the program were asked to respond to claims about workers peeing in trash cans or bottles \u2014 anecdotes that Amazon has disputed as recently as last week.<\/p>\n

\u201c| work for Amazon and not sure about other facilities but I\u2019ve never felt pressured to pee in a trash can,\u201d one trainee wrote in a draft tweet. \u201cMy managers understand when you gotta\u2019 go you gotta\u2019 go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazon wrote in the memo that it was \u201cencouraged by many of the un-coached responses\u201d like that one.<\/p>\n

While the keyboard warriors were free to rebut claims about Amazon\u2019s working conditions or pay, the company told them not to respond to tweets about employees\u2019 right to unionize or certain \u201ccompound issues,\u201d such as an inquiry about Amazon advertising on the right-wing blog Breitbart.<\/p>\n

Asked about the leaked document, Amazon spokesperson Rachael Lighty said the company\u2019s online ambassadors \u201cchoose to share their personal experience\u201d about fulfillment center work. <\/p>\n
