Of course, leave it to the late, great Satoshi Kon to find a way to masterfully teach us about the dangers of escapism and the importance of confronting trauma and reality, no matter how hard it is, in his first \u2014 and only \u2014 TV show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Paranoia Agent <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">begins with a woman walking home alone at night, when she is attacked by what appears to be a young boy wielding a golden baseball bat and riding around on in-like skates. Soon enough, more attacks take place, and the legend of the \u201cShonen Bat\u201d (or \u201cLil\u2019 Slugger\u201d in the dub) grows, and the police are overwhelmed.<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twin Peaks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this show is initially about a simple mystery \u2014 who is Lil\u2019 Slugger? Why did he attack? What\u2019s the connection between the attacks? And much like that classic David Lynch show, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia Agent <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quickly evolves into something more, an exploration of escapism and trauma through surrealism, as Satoshi Kon blends the line between reality and fiction in a terrifyingly precinct and surprisingly funny thriller.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Makes_It_Great\"><\/span><b>What Makes It Great<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned in my\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder Egg Priority<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article how much that anime resembled a Satoshi Kon production, but here\u2019s an <em>actual<\/em> Satoshi Kon <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>. From the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-anabfAg06U&amp;t=29s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opening sequence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alone, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia Agent <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intercuts character drama with surreal imagery that makes you question just what the hell is really going on and whether you can trust what\u2019s on the screen. This is, of course, a key part of the experience of watching a Kon movie, and the filmmaker did talk about how much of the show was him <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20051211185440\/http:\/\/plaza.bunka.go.jp\/english\/festival\/backnumber\/winners_i\/p22\/kon.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trying to recycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many unused ideas for stories he couldn\u2019t fit into his feature film work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia Agent <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an anthology, and each episode tells a separate story focusing on a different character that only tangentially relates to the rest. The genius of the show is the way it jumps from comedy to horror, and fantasy to drama. There are episodes with washed-out lighting and hard cuts to create a constant sense of unease, followed by a bizarre yet cute scene of a talking Hello Kitty-like toy. That\u2019s sandwiched between an episode about a guy stealing from old ladies to pay the yakuza, and an episode about us finding out how much of a creep he is. We also get a goofy fantasy adventure where a kid tells detectives he attacked a bunch of people to save them from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dragon Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-style monsters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there\u2019s a trio of standalone episodes that are not really about the show, but about the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> idea of paranoia and other barely-related topics, like a very, very bleak comedy about internet friends failing to commit group suicide, a group of women gossiping about Lil\u2019 Slugger, and an incredibly prescient episode about the production of an anime show. Overproduction and bad working conditions were not new in the anime industry, but they certainly weren\u2019t nearly as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/24\/business\/japan-anime.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely discussed <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as they are today. Over a decade before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taught us about the struggle between the artistic and economical side of anime, Satoshi Kon turned that idea into a bleak yet poignant black comedy where an animator dies at their desk, but their supervisor doesn\u2019t notice because everyone sleeps at their desk all the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_It_Adds_to_the_Conversation\"><\/span><b>What It Adds to the Conversation<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It becomes clear very early on that those who get attacked by Lil\u2019 Slugger were emotionally cornered, and they are using the attack as a scapegoat for their own problems. This creates a situation where mass hysteria and fear of being attacked is played in contrast to the actual victims seemingly feeling relieved by being hit with a baseball hat. The more people get attacked, the more it seems like Lil\u2019 Slugger may be more than just a person, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> conceit like Candyman.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia Agent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was released right in-between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokyo Godfathers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paprika<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it feels mostly like a spiritual sequel to Kon\u2019s best-known film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfect Blue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in how they deal with social anxieties by blending reality with fiction to make the audience question just what they\u2019re actually watching. Already in its\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-anabfAg06U\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opening sequence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia Agent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses surreal imagery to convey its core theme of people doing their best to avoid confronting their trauma. The opening features all the supporting characters smiling and laughing as the world burns behind them. Every character on the show is trying to escape from something, to avoid confronting something big in their lives, and so they turn to vilify an external enemy or find comfort in escapist entertainment like a video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, or an anime. The show is not subtle about its message, but it\u2019s incredibly effective in portraying the hardship, and also the importance, of having to take responsibility for your own actions in order to heal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Non-Anime_Fans_Should_Check_It_Out\"><\/span><b>Why Non-Anime Fans Should Check It Out<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia Agent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a complex, thrilling, hilarious, and at times even terrifying show that comments on everything from Japanese society\u2019s response to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/historicalmusings.com\/2019\/04\/03\/%EF%BB%BFparanoia-agent-and-japans-role-in-the-war-responsibility-vs-victim-hood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their role in WWII<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to \u201ckawaii culture\u201d to the internet and social media. This show is a perfect companion to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfect Blue <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serial Experiments Lain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the way it makes you doubt the reality of what you\u2019re watching.
