“#PETA slams ABC’s ‘Pooch Perfect’ as ‘dangerous’ for dogs<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Not so perfect after all. <\/p>\n

Animal-rights group PETA has denounced ABC\u2019s new dog-grooming competition, \u201cPooch Perfect,\u201d which pits 10 teams of groomers against each other to create over-the-top looks for a $100,000 cash prize. <\/p>\n

\u201cDogs trust us to keep them safe, but shows like\u00a0\u2018Pooch Perfect\u2019\u00a0can encourage people to treat them as if they were things to decorate, like a ceramic pot, giving them dangerous at-home dye jobs, which not only carry the risk of an allergic reaction or fatal toxic poisoning but also stress them out,\u201d the organization said in a statement to The Post. \u201cThe dogs used on this show aren\u2019t things but beings, and they deserve to curl up at home with a loving guardian \u2014 instead of having to put up with being leashed to a countertop and painted and prodded by strangers for hours on end.\u201d<\/p>\n

PETA\u2019s reaction to the series<\/a> came on the heels of social<\/a>-media pushback after Tuesday night\u2019s series premiere. <\/p>\n

\u201cDogs are not props for entertainment. The dogs look miserable and [it] feels cruel,\u201d tweeted<\/a> Michael Levitt, who was a producer on the \u201c2020 American Rescue Dog Show\u201d television special. \u201cI\u2019m shocked @ABCNetwork<\/a> was so tone deaf in green lighting this series.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe longer I watch this show, the worse I feel for these poor dogs,\u201d offered<\/a> a critic on Twitter, while another denounced<\/a> the program as \u201ctorturing dogs for the sake of human entertainment. Gross.\u201d<\/p>\n

At first I thought pooch perfect sounded like it may be a cute show.
Now it just looks like torturing dogs for the sake of human entertainment. Gross.

In a story published Tuesday about the show, which is hosted by Rebel Wilson, celebrity dog groomer and show judge Jorge Bendersky told The Post that, \u201cSafety is always the first concern.\u201d In addition, veterinary professionals including Dr. Callie Harris oversaw which nontoxic pet care and styling products that were used on the show.<\/p>\n

Bendersky further pushed for dog owners to only use temporary, dog-safe dyes and to take care when app<\/a>lying them. \u201cYou can try to dye your dog pink \u2014 but, remember, that dog is going to shake. So you might end up with pink walls, and a pink sofa,\u201d he added. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to really plan the logistics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s debut episode featured some significant transformations, including a white dog that morphed into a skunk and a poodle given an eye-popping pink conversion. Other episodes will feature holiday-inspired makeovers, like a pooch repurposed as a Halloween pumpkin and a Maltese given a new pastel look suitable for Easter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI push them and push them and push them, and they deliver,\u201d Bendersky said of the creations on the show. \u201cI think that the viewers are going to be so amazed by the work.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABC didn\u2019t immediately reply to an email request for comment from The Post. <\/p>\n
