The COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and partnering biotechnology<\/a> company BioNTech has proven \u201chighly effective\u201d against the coronavirus \u2014 including variants \u2014 for at least six months after full inoculation.<\/p>\n

The two companies announced on Thursday<\/a> that the latest phase of testing \u2014 which includes an analysis of 927 confirmed symptomatic cases of COVID-19, and 46,307 trial participants total \u2014 showed the vaccine to be 91.3% effective against transmission.<\/p>\n

In terms of \u201csevere\u201d illness and death, the vaccine is 95%, and up to 100%, effective, according to definitions set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), respectively. <\/p>\n

Furthermore, data from more than 12,000 recipients of Pfizer\u2019s vaccine demonstrates the shot\u2019s safety for a vast majority.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese data confirm the favorable efficacy and safety profile of our vaccine and position us to submit a Biologics License App<\/a>lication to the U.S. FDA,\u201d said Albert Bourla<\/a>, chairman and CEO of Pfizer, in a statement. \u201cThe high vaccine efficacy observed through up to six months following a second dose and against the variant prevalent in South Africa provides further confidence in our vaccine\u2019s overall effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n
