This selfie was taken in front of \u2018Mont Mercou,\u2019\u00a0a rock formation that\u2019s 20ft (6m) tall,\u201d JPL posted,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s made up of 60 images from my MAHLI\u00a0camera\u00a0and 11 images from my Mastcam. Look close enough to spot a new drill hole \u2013 my 30th sample to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The selfie, taken earlier in the month, was posted alongside\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/curiositys-3d-view-of-mont-mercou\">an additional pair<\/a>\u00a0of three-dimensional and panoramic shots of the Martian landscape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/curiositys-selfie-at-mont-mercou\">In a caption<\/a>\u00a0accompanying the image, JPL explained that Curiosity had stitched together different images to create the selfie in front of the 20-foot-tall rock outcrop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe panorama is made up of 60 images taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) on the rover\u2019s robotic arm on March 26, 2021, the 3070th Martian day, or sol, of the mission,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThese were combined with 11 images taken by the Mastcam on the mast, or \u2018head,\u2019\u00a0of the rover on March 16, 2021, the 3,060th Martian day of the mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"224\" alt=\"NASA\u2019s Curiosity Mars rover used its Mastcam instrument to take the 32 individual images that make up this panorama of the outcrop nicknamed \u201cMont Mercou.\u201d \" class=\"wp-image-17721144 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/nasa-curiosity-21.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/nasa-curiosity-21.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/nasa-curiosity-21.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/nasa-curiosity-21.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/nasa-curiosity-21.jpeg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>NASA\u2019s Curiosity Mars rover used its Mastcam instrument to take the 32 individual images that make up this panorama of the outcrop nicknamed \u201cMont Mercou.\u201d <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/MSSS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Curiosity landed on Mars\u2019 surface\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/msl\/mission\/overview\/\">on\u00a0Aug. 6, 2012, at 1:32 am ET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Visible to the left of the rover is a hole where its robotic drill sampled a rock named by the scientists as \u201cNontron\u201d \u2014 a village in\u00a0southeastern France.<\/p>\n<p>Nontron-related nicknames were chosen because Mars orbiters detected\u00a0nontronite, a type of clay mineral, in the region.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/news\/8901\/nasas-curiosity-mars-rover-takes-selfie-with-mont-mercou\/\">a Tuesday news release from JPL<\/a>, researchers explained that Curiosity\u2019s drill had \u201cpowderized\u201d the Nontron sample before \u201ctrickling it into instruments inside the rover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The process was necessary in order for their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> team to better understand the rock\u2019s composition and history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis area is at the transition between the \u2018clay-bearing unit\u2019\u00a0Curiosity is departing and the \u2018sulfate-bearing unit\u2019\u00a0that\u2019s ahead on Mount Sharp, the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain that the rover has been rolling up since 2014,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScientists have long thought this transition might reveal what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened to Mars as it became the\u00a0desert planet\u00a0we see today,\u201d added JPL.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
