For 20-somethings and older, the No. 1 game<\/a> on the app<\/a> store right now features a familiar face.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrash: On The Run!\u201d has been the most downloaded mobile game since its release on March 25, amassing 8 million downloads on its first day<\/a> and landing a digital cover<\/a> from Men\u2019s Journal. <\/p>\n

The game stars Crash Bandicoot, the iconic and extremely goofy character from the classic video game franchise, which produced a number of popular titles on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and other consoles (and also just released a volume on the PS4 and Xbox One in 2019).<\/p>\n

The success is due to an aggressive marketing campaign \u2014 and a commitment by game developer King to bring as close to a full console experience as possible on mobile. \u201cCrash: On The Run!\u201d is a runner game in the vein of \u201cTemple Run\u201d and \u201cSubway Surfers,\u201d but features boss battles (including infamous villain Dr. Neo Cortex), character upgrades and an evolving world to explore.<\/p>\n

With mobile versions becoming more of a fixture in the gaming world, the team made an effort to build the \u201ccrashiest Crash adventure\u201d in existence, full of explosive crates and rapid action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mobile game had to have console-quality animation, VFX [visual effects] and action,\u201d said Stephen Jarrett, VP of game design at King. \u201cAll the death animations in the console game are here. Crash dies a lot in the console games, and there\u2019s a lot of death animations. There might be even more in the mobile game.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to push the graphics as to what a runner could be on a mobile game,\u201d said visual development lead Nana Li. The sound design is also one of the game\u2019s highlights, with composer Sebastian Aav writing a number of catchy tunes while also using unusual methods to create sound effects, such as stepping on bubble wrap to simulate Crash\u2019s footsteps, for example.<\/p>\n

To their credit, the game is entertaining \u2014 the gameplay evolves and gets more challenging as you move through the worlds, and there\u2019s enough content to waste hours of commuting time. It has the familiar, annoying trappings of mobile games \u2013 constant pop-up ads encouraging you to spend money to improve the experience \u2013 but them\u2019s the breaks in mobile gaming.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also not as freakishly addicting as \u201cTemple Run,\u201d but perhaps that\u2019s a good thing.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
