“#\u2018Black Widow\u2019 Will \u201cHand The Baton\u201d to Florence Pugh<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

If things had gone according to plan,\u00a0Black Widow<\/em><\/strong> would\u2019ve hit theaters by now. But of course, 2020 is not a normal year, and the long-awaited solo film devoted to\u00a0Scarlett Johansson<\/strong>\u2018s spy-turned-superhero was pushed back to November. But we don\u2019t have to wait that long to learn what sounds like an important plot detail: the passing of the baton from Johansson\u2019s\u00a0Natasha Romanoff to Florence Pugh<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Yelena Belova.<\/p>\n

Even before the first\u00a0Black Widow<\/em> trailer arrived, there were theories that the film would involve Scarlett Johansson\u2019s Natasha Romanoff handing over the Black Widow name to Florence Pugh\u2019s Yelena Belova. For one thing, Yelena Belova adopted the Black Widow moniker in the comics. For another, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natasha is already dead, having sacrificed herself in\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/a><\/em>. The\u00a0Black Widow<\/em> movie is a prequel, and if Marvel wants to keep the\u00a0Black Widow<\/em> brand going following the film, they either need to resurrect Natasha, or have a new character\/actress take over the role.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Empire,\u00a0Black Widow<\/em> director\u00a0Cate Shortland<\/strong> app<\/a>ears to have let the cat out of the bag early, and confirmed that Pugh will indeed be taking over:<\/p>\n

\u201c[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,. And we didn\u2019t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn\u2019t know\u00a0how<\/em>\u00a0great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m handing her the baton.\u2019 So it\u2019s going to propel another female storyline.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sure, Shortland doesn\u2019t flat-out say \u201cFlorence Pugh is the new Black Widow!\u201d there, but\u2026you can read between the lines, people. The director also reveals that the movie will address Natasha\u2019s death:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn\u00a0Endgame<\/em>, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn\u2019t have wanted a funeral. She\u2019s too private, and anyway, people don\u2019t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that\u2019s a fitting ending for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ve found the trailers for\u00a0Black Widow<\/em> to be rather disappointing so far, but I certainly won\u2019t complain about the prospect of more Florence Pugh. Pugh has proven herself to be a phenomenal performer, and while I\u2019ve enjoyed\u00a0Johansson\u2019s take on Black Widow, I\u2019m very interested to see what Pugh does with the part going forward.<\/p>\n

Black Widow<\/em> is set to open November 6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
