A\u00a0British\u00a0music\u00a0professor has completed Wolfgang Amadeus\u00a0Mozart\u2019s\u00a0unfinished works in a decade-long effort the classical expert admitted took a \u201cbloody cheek.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timothy Jones, who teaches at London\u2019s Royal Academy of Music, released an album last Friday filled with pieces he finished for the 18th-century\u00a0master, according to CBC Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not trying to write fake Mozart and I\u2019m not trying to sort of put myself on a pedestal next to him,\u201d Jones\u00a0told the\u00a0host\u00a0of\u00a0CBC\u2019s \u201cAs it Happ<\/a>ens.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called\u00a0himself a \u201cbit presumptuous\u201d and said\u00a0he had a \u201cbloody cheek \u2026 to even try\u201d in a separate interview, according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n

Jones got the idea 10 years ago while writing a book about Mozart\u2019s composing style.<\/p>\n

\u201cI became particularly interested in trying to figure out what I could learn from the music he hadn\u2019t finished, as well as the pieces that he had,\u201d Jones said. The body of work, he said, add up to more than 100 fragments of compositions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found I could possibly say more efficiently what I wanted to know about these fragments in notes rather than in words,\u201d he said in the CBC interview.<\/p>\n

The idea of completing an artist\u2019s work isn\u2019t unheard of, Times music editor Zachary Woolfe noted,\u00a0giving Mozart\u2019s Requiem, Mahler\u2019s 10th Symphony and Puccini\u2019s \u201cTurandot\u201d as examples.<\/p>\n

In the literary world of unfished works, \u201cBridget Jones\u2019s Diary\u201d writer Andrew Davies even had a go at finishing Jane Austen\u2019s \u201cSanditon\u201d for the lavishly done 2019 miniseries<\/a>, which followed other completions of the unfinished book.<\/p>\n

In some cases, Jones completed the music in multiple ways, something\u00a0Woolfe called \u201cchose-your-own-adventure\u201d composing.<\/p>\n

Jones said he wanted to express how \u201copen-ended\u201d Mozart\u2019s music is and that he didn\u2019t have \u201ca clue how Mozart would have finished these unfinished pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since he hasn\u2019t revealed which parts of the music were written by him and which parts were composed by Mozart, he said he\u2019s had \u201cplenty of instances\u201d when well-known\u00a0musicians tell him they liked a section by Mozart that he actually wrote or they criticize him for a section written by the master.<\/p>\n

And just like Mozart, the professor said he composed very quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that [Mozart] wrote very quickly,\u201d he told the\u00a0radio\u00a0station.<\/a> \u201cBecause lots of his family talked about how he could be sort of lazy for months on end, but then when he started working, he worked very rapidly and very intensively. So most of the composing I did on my 30-minute commute into central London.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones said with Mozart\u2019s works completed, he now plans to return to an\u00a0unfinished book that he abandoned to take on the\u00a0Mozart project.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPutting the hubris aside,\u201d he said, according to the\u00a0Times,<\/a> \u201cI\u2019d much rather Mozart had finished these pieces than I.\u201d<\/p>\n
