Chadwick Boseman<\/strong>\u2018s death last summer caught almost everyone off-guard as the actor had kept his\u00a0colon cancer diagnosis private. And\u00a0Ryan Coogler<\/strong>, who directed Boseman in\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>, was one of the many people surprised by Boseman\u2019s death, as he had already been working on the script<\/a> for\u00a0Black Panther 2<\/em><\/strong> for Boseman to star in. Following Boseman\u2019s passing, there was some question as to how the film series<\/a> could even continue. Eventually, everyone decided to move forward with altered plans \u2013\u00a0Black Panther 2<\/em> would happen, but rather than recast Boseman\u2019s now-iconic role of\u00a0T\u2019Challa, Coogler would re-work his script. In a recent interview, Coogler adds that moving forward would\u2019ve been exactly what Boseman would\u2019ve wanted.<\/p>\n

The quote from Ryan Coogler about\u00a0Black Panther 2<\/em> comes from THR<\/a>, where the filmmaker opened up a bit about having to continue on with the film in the wake of Chadwick Boseman\u2019s unexpected death. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what was going on,\u201d Coogler said in regards to Boseman\u2019s illness. \u201cI knew what he wanted me to know. I miss him in every way that you could miss somebody, as a friend, as a collaborator. And it sucks because I love watching movies, and I don\u2019t get to watch the next thing he would have made. So it\u2019s grief on a lot of levels, but then, it\u2019s a deep sense of gratitude because I can close my eyes and hear his voice.\u201d
\nAfter Boseman\u2019s death many wondered how, exactly,\u00a0Black Panther 2<\/em> would continue. Would Coogler and Marvel recast the lead role? The answer turned out to be no \u2013 rather than bring in a new actor to play T\u2019Challa, Coogler is instead reworking the script. It\u2019s not entirely clear how this will all work out \u2013 the most popular assumption is that the film will shift focus to\u00a0Letitia Wright<\/strong> as T\u2019Challa\u2019s sister Shuri, but that\u2019s just speculation for the time being.<\/p>\n

However things pan out, Coogler made it clear that giving up in the wake of Boseman\u2019s death was not an option. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to keep going when you lose loved ones. I know Chad wouldn\u2019t have wanted us to stop,\u201d the director said. \u201cHe was somebody who was so about the collective. Black Panther<\/em>, that was his movie. He was hired to play that role before anybody else was even thought of, before I was hired, before any of the actresses were hired. On that set, he was all about everybody else. Even though he was going through what he was going through, he was checking in on them, making sure they were good. If we cut his coverage, he would stick around and read lines off-camera [to help other actors with their performances]. So it would be harder for me to stop. Truthfully. I\u2019d feel him yelling at me, like, \u2018What are you doing?\u2019 So you keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black Panther 2<\/em> is currently set to open on\u00a0July 22, 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
